Series/Season Structure - 'Let's Make Our Own Season' Game

Welcome to the second part of making the ideal series of Doctor Who! We have decided to make two separate topics for polls; this topic is for the overall structure of the series; the other is for characters. There will be polls running concurrently in each topic.

The first question in this topic is regarding how connected we want the stories to be.

  • Serialised: an ongoing story made up of different parts, in the style of Flux, or Trial of a Time Lord.
  • Episodic: completely unconnected stories with no ongoing arcs. Think most of Classic Who, or series 11 of New Who.
  • Episodic with serialised elements: separate stories that have a connective thread running through them, perhaps culminating in a finale, like season 16 of Classic, or the typical ‘arcs’ found in Moffat’s and RTD’s New Who.

Note that the “episodic” and “episodic with serialised elements” may or may not contain New Who-style two-parters, depending on later story decisions.

Which Approach do you want?
  • Serialised
  • Episodic with serialised Elements
  • Episodic

As with the “character” topic, please feel free to use this topic to discuss your opinions on the polls.

(A similar Thread was posted already, but something went wrong, and we decided to just do one Thread from scratch, apology for anybody who already voted, any Votes here will be counted for the next 24 Hours give or take)

I was tempted to vote for episodic only but knew it wouldn’t be popular enough.

I’d really like a serialised story[1], but episodic with serialised elements just works a lot better for what we’re doing here.

Nothing wrong w a protest vote! Speak your truth, hehe

You made me change to episodic. I think that the season finale is often the worst episode of New Who. If we skip the overarching story we can just make a good final episode!

There are people round here, though, for whom it’s all about the arcs…

I know. They are the same ones that punching a wall for 45 minutes is peak Doctor Who…

But we shouldn’t think like this. We are making the perfect season of Doctor Who. So we obviously avoid all the traps and weaknesses of real seasons. So we can have episodic with arcs and make it actually good!

as a flux stan…. i need flux 2.0

Like avoiding having a big finale because they tend to become boring.

That might be the case in the real world, but in our game, that doesn’t happen! We shouldn’t avoid things just because they are bad in real life; we aren’t making a real season after all

Actually, the episodic people might be winning me over. What if we just… do small stories sometimes and big stories sometimes at Random Points. Like Robot → Genesis of the Daleks… we can even have mid-season regneneration back. Unexpected. Hmmm…

What @Tian says:

What @Tian does:

  • The Parting of the Ways 4.5 stars
  • Army of Ghosts & Doomsday 4.5 stars
  • The Stolen Earth: 4.5 stars
  • The Pandorica Opens & The Big Bang: 5 stars
  • The Name of the Doctor: 4.5 stars
  • Dark Water: 5 stars, Death in Heaven: 4.5 stars
  • Hell Bent: 4.5 stars
  • The Doctor Falls: 4.5 stars

Yes that took me ages to check.

It seems you rate highly the finales and don’t find them boring!

Oh I thought we were! I was about to do a fundraiser and pitch it to Bad Wolf for when the show is cancelled by BBC :joy:

I would love a mid-season surprise regeneration.

Lol. You used my trick against me. That feels like cheating :joy:

I remember wanting a mid episode surprise regeneration for 14 instead of it happening right at the end of The Giggle…

The monkey paw curled when we got the bigeneration :joy:

(but yes mid season surprise regeneration please)

Or a mid-season bigeneration gone wrong, setting up the seasons badly to be the other new Doctor… Now I start to plan for story arcs again…

It’s not much of a surprise if we know it’s coming, is it?

Well yes but we are the writers! We have to know what’s coming!
