Saying “Oh, Hello!” to the forum!

Hello everybody! Very excited to be here! I’ve been a Doctor Who fan since I was 2 years old, when I watched Nightmare Of Eden with my dad on Colorado Public Broadcasting, early 80s. I got hooked on it, one of my earliest memories is the regeneration in Logopolis a year or so later (the very fact that that COULD happen on this show blew my child mind. He’s the same but he’s a different guy now?! Whaaaat). I still have my membership card from the Doctor Who Appreciation Society that my dad signed me up for when I was four, with my child signature on it. I got to watch the tail end of the classic series as it came to the US, and I had caught up on all available previous Doctors on reruns or VHS by the time they axed the show (S25 and 26 are a little bit peak for me). But really, I am a Wilderness Years kid, the VNAs rock, the 8DAs rock, Big Finish rocks.

My fav Doctors would be 2, 5, 7, 11, 13, and I will take literally any 8th Doctor content you have. I’ve been known to say that McGann is my all-time fave because of how great his audio adventures have been (Charley era, Lucie era, Dark Eyes, Doom Coalition, and Stranded are all pretty stellar)! And I have been known to say that 13 is my favorite new series Doc, Jodie’s energy and intelligence and her joy and naff jokes and grumpiness and scientific brilliance are just exactly the kind of traits I love most in the character (I like 11 so much for similar reasons), and I honestly love her stories as well, I think The Timeless Child is a really cool idea that you won’t catch me disparaging! Orphan 55 is better than Space Babies haha! (Good, good, making friends already)

But I truly love every incarnation, I fully believe they have never cast the part incorrectly, every actor has been exceptional whether or not their particular era served them well (poor Old Sixie, but again BF stepped in and fixed that problem). I do love the 2005 revival era, although I have my issues with the over reliance on arcs because the potential is so high to spoil a season if the mystery you’ve hinged it all on isn’t resolved satisfactorily (topical!). Mostly I have never gotten over the thrill of not knowing what will happen next when the TARDIS doors creak open somewhere new. The show has limitless potential, and I may sometimes get grumpy at it when it won’t take itself seriously, but I will never ever not take the ride. There’s nothing else like it!

Fav companions: Ace. What if I just left it at that haha? She is, but my favorite kind of companions are typically people like Zoe, Romana, Nyssa, Clara, I really like a proactive & even a sciencey clever person who could nearly resolve the plot themselves if they had to. Also I have the biggest soft spot in the world for some of the lads, especially Jamie and Rory, and The Brig of course who essentially counts. When I was 13 I named my cat Adric, this is who you’re dealing with lol.

Personal deets: I work in audio production, I also make records and write things, I have a little black cat named Kaiju who is my best pal, a lovely girlfriend who likes the new show but is watching the classics with me for the first time (she really liked the 4/Romana/K-9 era) and I live in Los Angeles, CA. I’m a big cinephile (particularly love film noir, martial arts flicks, and Agnès Varda), my favorite show that isn’t DW is probably Twin Peaks or Columbo or Better Call Saul (and its more action-oriented sequel, I forget the name /j ). Been playing guitar, bass, keys, writing songs since I was a teenager, have toured in lots of bands, lived in five very different states, and now make comedy podcasts. It’s been a weird life lol, but never dull! Happy to be here, this seems like a good crew and a good vibe.

Oh I gasped! A fan of Thirteen and of Varda! You’re most definitely in the good books haha

Agnès was a pure, undiluted genius, not least because she’d only seen a handful of movies before making her first, she just came at it from the angle of “what if my gorgeous photography could also talk” so she essentially invented her own cinema. Could talk about her foreverrrr :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Welcome to the forum (again) - good to have another Fifth Doctor enjoyer onboard! Have you heard the recent Hooklight sets from Big Finish? If not, I would massively recommend them!

Also another Agnes Varda fan, hello

Not yet, but thank you so much for the recommendation! The last two years I’ve really fallen off on new BF, and I need a reason to get back on board! I’ve loved so many 5 audios though, Cobwebs springs to mind as a firm favorite!

Definitely give them a go, because they’re really fantastic! The Merfolk Murders is another slammer with the season 19 crew that came out in 2024. I’ve been on a bit of a Fifth Doctor audio marathon lately (hence the profile pic), and he really has some fantastic recent stuff. I haven’t done the Older Nyssa arc though, so now you’ve recommended Cobwebs I’ll have to fit it in somewhere!

Oooh yeah, there’s a few of the older Nyssa stories that are REALLY good (also a few that are a little bit ropey, but that’s Who for ya haha)

I can tell that we’ll get on great!

Now then, I’d argue that Stranded is the weakest of the 8DA boxset run

Interesting! You might be right in terms of how it ended (I was a bit confused), but I really loved the journey! Full disclosure: my dream has always been for The Doctor to have a period where he is trapped somewhere, not as a military advisor, but just has to make do, so Stranded kinda had me before it started! I enjoyed all The Curator stuff, I of course love Liv and Helen and I really liked Tania. But I have to agree with you that Dark Eyes and Doom Coalition are stronger overall. I think Ravenous might be the weakest for me, even though I love every John Dorney story in that run.

Dark Eyes 1 and Doom Co 3 are perfect boxsets

Yeah, the first Dark Eyes is almost unbeatable, it might be the best single story BF box.

I think Hooklight 1 and Friend of the Family provide it with stiff competition
