New Earth reference!! “The Green Moon is the universal symbol for medicine!”

Absolutely loved that.

But I knew I would: it’s one of my favourite TARDIS teams written by my favourite Who writer.

If it doesn’t turn out to he some Rutan replicant in future stories, then I feel like this is a very early eighth Doctor. You can hear the tip tapping of those new hospital shoes.

But confusingly, he references “the eternal war” in a way that felt like double speak for the Time War, which wouldn’t fit this version of 8…

I’m wondering if this will tie into some shenanigans going on in the new 8th Doctor sets at the end of the year, or if this is just self contained and will be completely explained in episode 4…

Wishful thinking but maybe it’s the War in Heaven? I’ve not even listened to this series lol so I don’t know the context

He was talking about the eternal war between the Sontarans and the Rutans,

But there was something about the delivery that suggested him and Zoe were at cross-purposes, and whilst she was talking about that, 8 was talking about the Time War.

But he doesn’t even know about the Time War yet, let alone is involved in it!

Hopefully Jamie will explain when they listen to it, they’re better at figuring stuff out than I am.

I was interested in how this would tie in to the first set with any Doctor pre 13 being unable to know about Division without some memory shenanigans, but I didn’t think that we’d see the Division Rutan from that story be the ‘Melmoth’. Very interested in seeing where this goes

Also I think this 8 timeline wise is going to be just after seeing what happens at the Peace Conference in the Episode 4 and something will make him go through the history of the Melmoth which is why he keeps popping up in other stories

I’m assuming he meant the war between the Sontarans and the Rutans..

While I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much as the last one, I did like it and it was great hearing more of this team together. I think Zoe was utilised really good here too, and the overarching plot has much more of a definition than the previous range.

Official alt cover, soon to be on the guide for patrons with the new feature! [1]

This was good. I still think that I liked Betrayal better (I rated Betrayal 5/5 and this 4.5/5). With Eight seeming to be in all of these, I’m very interested to see how it all fits together. I also haven’t quite warmed to Michael Troughton as the Doctor. I still think David sounds more like Pat. Still, an enjoyable story and well worth the listen.

This was a lovely one, Tim Foley’s writing always has such a sense of careful consideration to me, he has this way of worldbuilding which is somehow vivid and economical at the same time, and gently but insistently interrogating his characters in a way that’s quite rare for Doctor Who. There’s an almost tender quality to his stories which I just adore. It was lovely to hear the Two/Jamie/Zoe team again, I think this is the first time I’ve done a story with them since I finished Troughton’s era for the first time back in December, and they all got some great moments. The scenes with Eight were interesting, McGann plays him a lot more along the lines of his TV movie/monthly range characterisation which I love, and I assume his appearance here will tie into whatever is happening in the finale somehow. The stuff with the Rutans and Sontarans was also really interesting, this series continues to find intriguing new ways to use both species. Together with Fear of the Light, this has been a really strong week of releases for Big Finish.

Chronologically, you have no idea how well that checks out with Big Finish early Eight. (Very well. From what I recall, all Big Finish is post-War except Izzy’s Story, Fitz’s Story and some Benny stuff. Not fully certain, though.)

Soooo, I had high hopes after the brilliant Betrayal and for a story with my favourite TARDIS team.

I was somewhat disappointed.

This is a thoughtful and atmospheric Second Doctor-style adventure built around an excellent moral dilemma and some surprisingly lovable poetry-reciting Rutans. The first two acts are strong, the hospital ship setting works beautifully, and the Troughton-era cast shine. Unfortunately, the late arrival of the Eighth Doctor and an overcrowded final act dilute the focus, resulting in an ending that feels more muddled than satisfying.

6/10 = Good

Review of Rendition by TheJanitorsBatcave · TARDIS Guide

This was enjoyable but I didn’t love it. I think it is the weakest story in both the Sontarans vs Rutans and Rutans vs Sontarans sets so far. I’ve probably rated it about half a star too high if I was being truly honest. Not terrible but I definitely expected more.

I will just say, The Doctor meets Zoe for this time in so long and there is no weight to it at all. They may as well be strangers and it really bugged me. I understand the plot demands for The Doctor to hide his identity but I feel Tim Foley really missed the mark on that reunion.

Glad it wasn’t just me. I felt exactly the same. Such wasted potential.

Yeah it really took me out of the story for a good few minutes. I am a firm believer that Tim Foley is one of the best writers Big Finish have. If not, the best. Alas no one is perfect.

Absolutely loved this one. I wasn’t expecting the link with the first story, and I am excited to see where this goes. Tim Foley is a very good writer, and this script was very clearly one of his (Nightjar reference!!!). I love the idea of Rutans writing poetry.

That really is a shame isn’t it? The series backed itself into a corner where it had to pretend that might NOT be the 8th Doctor for two full hours, honestly that was the thing I disliked about this second series the most, it didn’t need that hook to work, it made stories 2 and 3 feel more like filler than necessary, and prevented some really good scenes along the way. I’d have liked Rendition a lot more if it just focused on 2/Jamie/Zoe.
