RTD2 era physical media outside of the UK

With the new episodes of Doctor Who (and presumably The War Between the Land and the Sea) only being available to watch on Disney+, I was wondering if DVD and blu-ray releases will only be available on region 2 discs. Knowing how streaming services (including Disney+) have deleted Disney+ only TV shows off of the platform that have no physical media, it’s not exactly a promising precedent, and I was wondering what are your thoughts on it. The 60th anniversary specials have been released on DVD in the US (I own it, and almost squealed when I saw it at Barnes and Noble), but I don’t know about any other RTD2 era media or about any other regions.

I don’t know. If available, I’d love to see if my library can get a copy, for those who don’t have Internet or Disney+. It’s common for people in my area not to have Internet because it doesn’t reach their home. I know people who live where the ISP will go to the end of their driveway but not down their driveway. Also, affordability is often a factor.

I’m hoping that your library can get a copy! That’s also generally why I love physical media; libraries can have copies, and people can check it out for free!

Can you get multi-region players?

Regions were such a bad idea. Another example of capitalism making everything worse.

I agree with you that regions on DVDs make no sense, both from a personal standpoint (sometimes there are shows I want to watch, but can’t stream in the US, and the DVD isn’t available in my region), and even from a capitalism standpoint (I’m probably not the only person who would purchase a few more DVDs if they were compatible with their player). If I remember correctly, selling multi-region players in the US can be a bit of a legal gray area, but that owning them is legal. I can’t speak for other countries.
Edit: not to sound like a terribly boring person, but it has been a dream of mine since I was a kid to own a multi-region DVD player for those purposes.

I have no idea. Probably online, but if you don’t have internet… There’s a reason why Wi-Fi hotspots are very popular items[1].

  1. currently, the Verizon hotspot has 62 holds on 26 copies (individual devices), and the T-Mobile hotspot has 67 holds on 55 copies ↩︎

It will just take one year after D+ drop in the US. 60th specials came out exactly a year after The Giggle. I’d imagine S1 including Ruby Road will be June 22nd, one year after Empire of Death.

It looks like season one (2024 edition) is releasing in the US on DVD and bluray on June 24. @TARDIS32 was only off by two days.

One year after D+ drop. Their standard exclusivity period.

My cheap TV by Bush has a DVD player and plays region-free DVDs so if you have an Argos alternative that do them, then you might be able to get a region-free DVD player. (or you can Amazon one, I know there are plenty on Amazon)

This might interest people who are in Germany: The DVD/Blu-ray for Season 1/Series 14/Season 40 will release over here on the 27th of June! One Year and a few Days after the season ended last Year. I’d imagine the same will be true for a German physical Release of Season 2/Series 15.
