To me, it is a shorter comic that is formatted for a newspaper. But I am saying this because this is how the Swedish word “Seriestripp” translates. @deltaandthebannermen might be better than me to answer this.

Yes, they’re based on the short form newspaper style (which probably doesn’t even feature in newspapers anymore but used to be things like Peanuts and Fred Bassett.)
I think comic strip is fine even if we use that to describe longer ones as well.
