I was wondering the same thing…
The discord had a lot to say about it last night…
Someone fill me in on what happened on Discord last night plz??? The three in-depth reviews vary so much in style, content and maybe even genre?

I had had a couple of gins when the conversation surrounding the reviews went on and each message was like an essay so I don’t really know tbh
Okaaay… Now I’m intrigued
I’m also in the camp that thinks of the loose canon reconstructions as the main versions for any serials with missing episodes. I watch the animated versions if I have access to them, but even then I sometimes skip around the reconstructed version of an animated episode, to see if there were any intact clips and compare a little.
Love the Loose Cannon love and appreciation here. For me, these are the most “definitive” versions of missing stories, but I also appreciate the narrated soundtracks and animations too.
I generally like having the animations, but sometimes the animation quality isn’t always the best, and there’ve been times where I feel like the general appearances of things vary far too much in the animation from what they actually looked like. (I seem to remember this on The Underwater Menace a fair bit…)
In general, animation tends not to really do justice to Patrick Troughton. Often it doesn’t look close enough to him, and his performances are just so much better when you can see them…

Basically ThetaSigmaEarChef asked me to add that stupid worm video, and I said only if they write a 200 word review of it calling it a masterpiece.
So they did (and over 1000 words), then others followed along
I think the situation with the animations is a bit odd. When they first appeared they were plugging gaps in mostly existing stories - The Invasion, The Reign of Terror - and so the animators stayed closer to what was on screen because it was fitting in between actual footage.
Therefore, when the full story animations started up (which lets remember was quite a while after those initial projects which we were told at the time were probably one offs) fans assumed they would be ‘faithful’ versions like those early ones. In fact, the complete ones took a different, perfectly valid (IMO) artistic choice. This put a lot of fandoms noses out of joint because they couldn’t see that, ultimately, these animations can never actually replicate the original footage successfully. This in turn lead to Ian Levine creating his AI abominations which purport to be more accurate (but in fact are anything but in a lot of cases).
For me, the animations are more akin to a Target novelisation - an adaptation of the story where things may be added, taken away, re-emphasised etc. There are Targets which bear very little resemblance to what happened in the original story (The Massacre and The Myth Makers, for example) or expand hugely on the source material (Ghost Light, The Curse of Fenric).
If I want accuracy, the closest I can get are the reconstructions so that’s where I will go.
Admittedly, the fact that when the full story is animated, I’m probably still going to watch any original episodes that still exist, even if there’s an animated version probably doesn’t help, because it leaves me switching back and forth.
Of course, my issue with Ian Levine’s AI abominations is the abomination part. I’d actually like to take AI and have it clean up and upscale the existing footage so it looks better, for example… but I want it to actually look better, and be as close to the original as possible as it would be if we had better copies.
but I want it to actually look better, and be as close to the original as possible
You mean you don’t agree with Ian Levine’s AI “dog biscuit” decision?

I was thinking about the dog biscuit bit when I typed that. It’s farcical that he says his versions are ‘more accurate’ when he’s presenting people with stuff like that.
For those keeping count, it’s now 614.
I don’t think there are enough stories ready to import to make it over 750 this month.
But it’s still a really good record
Yes I know I said I was taking a break but I got carried away today. Now taking a break for realsies.
I have not written here in a while and thought that I could get an update on how everything is going. Someone has added some new stuff to the backlog and we need to keep going! Soon we will cross the 10,000-story mark!

I could… but I don’t think I’ve got as far as those issues yet.
Looks like they start in #204
I’m on something like #56…
It is time to pick up the phase then
I recently noticed we’re missing the target novelisation of androids of Tara by David Fisher. We have the 1980 version by Terrance Dicks, and the audio version of 2012 by Fisher, but not the 2022 book based on that audio version.
Similarly, we might want to add a different version of the warriors gate novelisation as it appears in warriors’ gate and beyond, but as that has the same author and I haven’t had time to read it yet, I don’t know if the changes are substantial enough
Yeah I think that all the ones with multiple versions need to be added.
