Rest in Peace, David A. McIntee

It has been announced that David A. McIntee - the man who did an impressive amount of research for his pure historicals, has passed away.

He has written many novels across different book ranges. The most famous perhaps being - The Dark Path that explored the origins of the Master, The Face of the Enemy that had the Master filling the role of the Doctor while he was away, Sanctuary - the first pure historical since “The Black Orchid” and Gary Russell’s favourite VNA, and Unregenerate audiodrama which dealt with the Seventh Doctor’s post regeneration trauma.

Not that familiar with his work, but it’s sad nonetheless. Rest in peace, David!

Dang. I quite enjoyed some of his novels. Face of the Enemy is quite good if you don’t mind a lot of violence. It’s essentially a Cold War thriller, mixed with a hardcore gangster movie, with the Inferno earth, and the Delgado Master, Ian and Barbara helping UNIT while the Doctor and Jo are on Peladon.

Oh my goodness. I’m reading Mission: Impractical at the moment. I’ve had an up and down relationship with his stories but quite a few have definitely been favourites such as Face of the Enemy, Sanctuary and the audio Unregenerate!

A devastating loss for fandom, especially for fans of the Wilderness Years. McIntee had a serious knack for looking at a place and time and cutting straight to the heart. His characters were real, independent of the Doctor. Whether he was writing about a sci-fi hard setting, or introducing a (let’s be honest) mostly white Western audience to histories they’d never heard of, he had a knack for turning dates and figures into a story in his books. You could feel the research and passion on the page - I wish I’d had the chance to discuss some of his interests with him. I never knew McIntee, but from what I’ve heard of him from others, and seen on his Twitter, he was a funny, thoughtful kind man, full of wit and, importantly, compassion. We have all lost an interesting storyteller. All my love is with Lesley, his wife, at this difficult time.

My full condolences go to all his close ones, especially his Wife.
(I wish I could talk properly about this Man’s Work, since I am unfamiliar with him, but I appreciate really that not only did he brought back pure historical after such a long while, but also his amounts of researches in regard to it.)
Rest in Peace, David
