Rating system change

A button in customisation that visually changes the 5-star based system into a 10-star based system. It’s not hard it’ll just multiply every number by 2 for the user. (3.42 will become 6.84). And also an option to choose either 1 digit after the point or 2 (so it can either be 3.4/6.8 or 3.42/6.84)

I know a lot of people use from 1 to 10 scale (me included) and it’ll be nice to see those from 1 to 10 numbers. Especially since Tardis Guide DOES HAVE the .5s

That’s doable if you’re just talking about the numbers.

The reason lots of sites use 5 stars is it’s just so much easier to show in things like this:

If I have to show 10 stars there it will either have to be huge, or the stars will have to be too small to read.

If we switched the numbers to be out of 10, but kept the stars out of 5, it gets a whole lots more confusing.

Also, 1-5 can stop a lot of people agonising over a rating. The internal argument of “is it a 7 or an 8” can lead to people not rating things. With the 1-5 you can say “well it was better than a 3, but not quite a 4. 3.5 it is”.

Yeah, I respect the opinion but my vote on this one is PLEASE NO

This is very true. I usually prefer 1-10 because, in my mind, it allows for more nuance and can allow people to better represent their feelings on things. That’s good in some cases so it’s not a bad idea. But that’s a major reason I wouldn’t want to see it here. It would make things a lot less casual.

People would sit there changing their ratings all day, worrying about making sure their feelings were accurately represented. As it is, I give a lot of half stars to try to capture nuance. In my mind, if a person really wants to rationalize or accurately show how they feel, they can leave a review.

Plus, yes, it would look awkward on the site.

I use up to 1-10 with a decimal point on my personal spreadsheet, and it is sometimes fun to agonizingly, pretentiously deliberate “Well, this one is a 7.9, but I like this one a liiittle bit better, so it’s an 8.3” But it’s also fun to migrate them over to the site and get brought down to earth with “they’re all 4.”

I give this thread a 7.8/10.

7.8? You madman, it’s clearly a 7.46. Honestly, the takes here are terrible /j

Folks please stick to a 1-5 scale. We have rules around here. It’s a :star: :star: :star: ¼ to be sure. /lh

Yeah, I’m talking about just the numbers

I’m not talking about switching it to 10, I’m talking about an OPTION to just multiply the numbers by two so like 3.5 would APPEAR as 7. There’s already 10 options to rate but half of them are whole numbers and half are “point five”. It’s the same thing as from 1 to 10 just divided in half. I’m not asking to add 5 more stars since that’ll be ridiculous and pointless

I already rate out of ten, It just gets converted to out of 5 here. Like obviously seeing 1 whole star and half is a 3 out of 10. And deciding between 3 and 4 stars and giving 3.5 is not an equivalent of deciding between 7 and 8. It’s deciding between 6 and 8 and giving 7

An OPTION to just SEE the NUMBERS like if they were out of 10, but keep the star visual the same. The rating graph already consists of 10 lines it just shows numbers from 0.5 to 5.

So yeah people completely misunderstood what I asked for

I think most people did understand, they just find that math very easy to do in their heads or would find it confusing to have a visual of five stars with a number out of ten. In the end, this website is just used by many people and while shauny does his best to keep as many of them happy as possible, coding things for just one person usually isn’t really worth it

You are also asking for this

Which seems like a complete overhaul of the rating system, currently it is stars & half stars.

Like any suggestion I guess it depends on how much of a demand there is for it.

no, i think this also would only be a cosmetic chhange, simply rounding the averages to a digit less when displayed. I’m still not seeing a big demand for it, so it would depend on that ever becoming apparent

Ultimately though, it’s not like I really need it, but it’d just be nice to have an option like that.

I’m very confused by the whole thing because we have half stars… so it literally is the same as rating out of ten. Maybe this is just how my brain is wired but I literally cannot fathom the difference.

It is the same. But it would be nice to have an option to see the numbers out of ten and not the .5s
