Pop Music Discussion

I’m trying to get more into making topics, so here’s one for fans of pop music since that’s one of my favorite genres. I’m thinking this can be more of a thread for discussion and reviews of latest releases (or anything you’re currently listening to), while just the posting of videos would better suited for the general Music thread.

To kick it off, one of these days I need to do a relisten of Sabrina Carpenter’s Short ‘n’ Sweet. There were a couple tracks on the album I enjoyed (Espresso, PPP, Juno, Good Graces, Bed Chem), but the more country-oriented songs couldn’t hold my attention (and I am a country fan). That being said, I’ve learned about two of her older songs (Feather and Nonsense), and I’ve been listening to those more than what’s featured on her latest album!

I’m not really into modern pop. There are some things that pop up on work radio that I like, but I couldn’t tell you the name of any artist.

Last time I was listening to anything Pop would have been 2010. Take That - Progress is a great electro-pop album.

I love pre-1990s pop the most, but recently I’ve embarked on a mission to become more attune to modern pop. It definitely is more of a challenge to find artists I like.

Some years ago I started trying to listen to top 40 of the week on my travels to and from work. I managed to do it for a few weeks before giving up.

I don’t blame you; I’m not a fan of the vast majority of pop music from the 2000s and 2010s. Even now, I’m already considering giving up this task. I’ve come to like a decent handful of new music, but for every one artist I end up liking, I have to slog through fifteen others. It feels more like a chore than anything else.

I’m on a Chappell Roan kick right now. Just five or so songs right now, but still. I can’t stop playing them on repeat. I appreciate how uptempo her music is, as it’s been surprisingly difficult to find newer artists who don’t make slow, dreary, ballad-y, or “sensual” music (quotes because I don’t find them sensual lol). I want something I can dance to!

I’m definitely enjoying Rick Astley’s cover of Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club”!

My truth is that a lot of the newer pop girls are not it for me and of the ones dominating for me, I love me some Sabrina Carpenter. She’s probably the big one for me. Chapel Roan makes some absolute bops but she also keeps putting her foot in her mouth and it makes me like her less and less.
Taylor Swift is genuinely one of the greatest pop stars of all time.

I clocked out of pop music in 2016, love me some Ariana Grande tho. Does Down by Jay Sean count as pop music?

I don’t think I’d like CR that much as a person; I enjoy her music more not being familiar with her and her antics. The same goes for Taylor, but I love her poppier music. I’m a Midnights defender.

I had to look up who Jay Sean is lol. That style of music dominated the pop scene in the 2000s, so I’d say he qualifies. I didn’t know that’s what the singer of “Down” looked like!

I love Ariana’s music also. Her latest album had no skips.

You not knowing Jay Sean made me feel so old, I’m only 21 lol

I’m proud to say that I’ve got an Ariana Grande perfume too

You’re younger than I am haha.

I’ve never been big into 2000s music so although I know a lot of the songs by ear, I’m not that knowledgeable about that era of pop culture.

I have no idea what counts as mainstream pop now. Rina Sawayama is good, saw her live couple years back

She definitely counts. I need to become more familiar with her discography. I know a good handful of songs, but they’re all great. I feel like she falls in the same lane as Roan, both musically and aesthetically (also lgbt), but Roan got the bigger industry push.

I really like Chappell Roan, but working in a lesbian bar and hearing her constantly definitely burned me out for a while.
Love Charli XCX, Von Dutch was my favourite song from Brat and I’m still loving it.

The search for new music returns. Sigh. It’s such a chore.
