Philip Hinchcliffe Era Bracket Tournament

That’s definitely part of it, another big one is that ‘savage’ is a very loaded word, with some unsavory history, especially as it manages both to compare people to wild animals and call them uncivilized at the same time. Generally if you see the word as a noun and not an adjective, that should raise an eyebrow.

These are so hard!

And I bet they won’t get easier.

In a case of energy squared, The Masque of Mandragora has been put back to square one by The Ark in Space with a score of 24-9.

And Terror of the Zygons has decided to press the red button and destroy The Face of Evil for good, with a rather close score of 19-15.

Today we have another two first round matches. And they are:

First Round, Match 3

  • Revenge of the Cybermen
  • Genesis of the Daleks

I love you Android Invasion but it’s gotta be Pyramids really

I will be curious how much of the votes for Revenge of the Cybermen will be based on “I actually like Revenge more than Genesis” or “Genesis is overrated and has had so much praise already, I’ll vote against it to try to make it not win.” (Not a judgement on the vote already there for Revenge, just a general thought)

I don’t really rate either terribly highly but if I had to pick one to watch, it probably would be Revenge. I find Genesis just a little too long winded

I often hear that, but I’ve always thought it was very well paced, even the clams. It has just the right amount of gravitas, is suspenseful and exciting where it needs to be, Terry Nation firing on all cylinders. I think it is a story truly as great as its reputation.

I think I am also a little guilty of being a ‘ughh it’s overrated :roll_eyes:’ person and I think if I watched it I’d enjoy it more than I think I do

I tend to fall into the highly regarded episodes being highly regarded for a reason and usually agree camp. I can’t off the top of my head think of a single highly regarded story I don’t also like. Though I have plenty of usually panned stories that I like more than most.

The Android Invasion is one I’ve come around on, for instance. Yeah, it’s a little dumb in places, especially everything to do with Crayford, perhaps resolved a little too easily, but it does atmosphere really well in the first episodes. It’s solidly all right of a story.

I’m a big fan of the ones generally regarded as ‘too silly’ so Android Invasion is one I do have a great fondness for. I also like plenty of the so-called ‘greats’, there’s just a couple I don’t get the hype for

One thing I don’t see Challonge having is the ability to reseed based on the first round for the next round. Because I think making the one that wins by the greatest margin in the first round become the first seed in the second, the closest the lowest, would shake things up and make it interesting. But no, doesn’t seem to be an option, unless I want to do it manually, making a new bracket for each round.

This may be the first and only time I vote for a Cybermen story over a Dalek one. I don’t like either, but at least Revenge wrapped up the series’ story arc nicely.

I haven’t seen The Android Invasion so must sadly refrain from voting.

I enjoy all four of those stories, but I confess to liking ‘Genesis’ and ‘Pyramids’ just that little bit more.

Honestly, I think I enjoy all 16 of these stories. Maybe some to varying degrees, but there’s something to enjoy in all of them

Oh, I agree - it’s one of the strongest, if not the strongest, eras in the show’s history.

My least favorite is probably still a 6/10, especially since rewatching a few of them recently.

I’d say beginning with ‘The War Games’ in '69 and continuing straight through, the list of iconic/legendary stories approaches the absurd, with, as you said, the worst of the lot still being a decent watch.

Probably from about there to about Season 15. I’m less sold on the late 70s and into the 80s. Still some truly great stories there, but I think they start getting fewer and farther between once you get to Williams and Nathan-Turner.
