Personal Notes / Tags on Collectables - on the roadmap

Hey everyone this is a ROADMAP post which means you can vote for ideas that you want to see sooner, this will help shape the future of the site!

This is an interesting idea, not sure how popular it will be so hit that VOTE button if you’d like to see this (you get a limited number of votes, so you decide which ones are most important to you).

Do you want to keep track of where you keep that copy of Lungbarrow? Is it in the garage, or the attic?

Do you have stories on a thumb drive, stories on Kindle, stories that you’ve leant to your aunty, stories that you owned but then sold on eBay?

Would you like to keep track of all this information by adding personal notes to the collectables?

Maybe they are notes, or maybe reusable tags?

The possibilities are endless! What do you think? Should we build this feature?

Or maybe treat it like a private review. You can take notes etc for yourself.

“I like chapter 22. Ties into blah blah blah.”

Yep, private notes on stories / collectables was also another idea.

However text notes aren’t as useful as tags, because if I made tags you could easily sort & filter stories by those tags.

So “Show me all the books I have on Kindle, or all the ones on my bookshelf”

But yeah I’m not sure how useful this is vs. how long it would take to build.

I think it’s cool, but more back burner. It’s my feeling anyway. But hey, that’s why we have public voting.

I’m not going to vote yet (in case my vote limit runs out) but I think I might use this - for example with the comics, I have some as hard copies and some as ebooks and some as both!

I’d say it’s cool, but I don’t know if I’d actually use it so it’s not really important to me

I like the tags idea, but for notes I’d use my notes app anyway if I wanted to note something… But yeah tags and being able to sort is cool. Also makes me think of possibly an option to differentiate between your digital and physical collection?

I love this, both tags and notes, and would use it a lot. I’d love to be able to note the condition of some of my collectables (e.g. missing dut jacket, bent spine, bent cover, broken CD case, etc.), note when I have multiple of a particular item, note where I store an item, etc…

Beyond this, and likely requiring a lot more work so much lower priority for me, it would be cool if we could then make some (but not all) of these notes/tags publicly viewable (so perhaps public notes, private notes, public tags and private tags fields on each collectable) and then let people browse our collections of collectables and view these public notes and tags. However, I have no idea how large of a change this would require on the back end but private notes and tags would be a great starting point!

Just to expand on the second paragraph, one use case I have for this is as follows:

I spend significant time in two different locations. I am also very happy to lend items I own to people I know IRL in both of these locations. It would be cool if I could set a public tag for the overarching location of each collectable (with further private tags for their precise locations) and then let people browse my collection, filtering by overarching location to see what items I could lend immediately and which items would require me to go to the other location first to pick them up.

This is what I really want. It just feels wrong to mark audios I only have digital copies of as a collectable.

There is kinda a work-around for this already.

You can say you “own” an individual story, instead of the collectable.

Just click “unowned” on the story to toggle it.

Then it appears in your owned stories but doesn’t appear in owned collectables.

Not the most obvious thing. Again, I need to write some documentation.

Yes, I do that already. Just thought there might be a way to make it more obvious.
