Having now scuttled to the end of my visit to Vortis, I thought I’d bounce off my recent rewatch of The Three Doctors to dive into the legend of Omega.
I’ve even ordered the Cutaway Comics comics and audio featuring Omega (and the wonder that is Brian Blessed in the title role). I’ve now got to decide if I can afford to buy The Box of Terrors audio novel from BF.
Omega is such a startling good creation. The performance and costume design in The Three Doctors just work so well together. Stephen Thorne is magnificent! And that scene where he removes his mask is one of Who’s absolute best.
Seeing this figure from Gallifrey’s past - a legend - is such a good idea for an anniversary story.
The Three Doctors is such a comfort watch for me. I’ve been working through the bluray edition including the Behind the Sofa extra and making of documentary - both really good.
I think I’ve heard the commentaries before but I’m going to give them a relisten - Katy Manning, Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks being lovely.
I really like Omega as a villain. As Nev Fountain said in some behind the scenes material for Omega, he isn’t a good villain — he’s actually really terrible at being bad.
I also find him really tragic. That scene in Infinity where he walks around Amsterdam gazing at street attractions is so heartbreaking. All he wants to do is exist in the world.
Don’t ask me why but seeing this thread title took me right back to 2011 and seeing this video for the first time. How the hell did it get 20,000 views!? And I don’t see anything!
I think Matt Berry as the Monk would just irritate me. I like him enough in Garth Marenghi and the IT Crowd but he’s basically always the same and I think I’d see him as ‘Matt Berry’ more than I would see him as the Monk. And 100% he’d be wrong for Omega.
