kind of think it was weird for my introduction to The Master to be the 1996 movie
The first episode of the show I ever watched was ‘The Day of the Doctor,’ when a friend invited me along to the cinema screening. Needless to say, I was left very confused, but I was utterly intrigued.
I also became overly familiar with the Geoffrey Beevers Master from his audios before I watched Keeper of Traken. It was weird seeing the character onscreen for once, as though the two mediums were making a proper crossover.
Similarly, my only experience with Dodo so far has been her audios with Stephen Noonan’s 1st Doctor. I imagine it’ll be weird when I get round to her tv episodes, as I’ve heard that Dodo loses her northern accent after her introduction.
I’m currently just picking books at random to read so there are a couple companions that I’m being introduced to in weird way, specifically Bernice, but I’m definitely enjoying her so far.
same haha I pretty much always start from the beginning of something new
Bernice is awesome.
My introduction to Melanie Bush was watching Terror of the Vervoids. I didn’t read her introduction story, Business Unusual, till many years later.
Sorry, had to, didn’t I? I’m guessing one or two of the companions from the 60s I would have encountered first through whichever novelization I read first, but who knows? The Programme Guide came out before most of those novelizations, and I’m sure that’s how I got to know most of them.
I’m sure The Time Warrior wasn’t my first Sarah Jane adventure, or Terror of the Autons for Jo. All depends on what PBS was airing when I first started watching. But anything from Adric on, I was probably introduced when the character was introduced, whether it was TV, books, DWM or BF (until I stopped with DWM and BF).
I listened to about five series of Gallifrey before I ever saw Leela in a televised episode!
The fact that I was introduced to Hex through Live 34 probably counts as an odd introduction.
I have to imagine that I first saw the first and second Doctors either in the Three Doctors or the Five Doctors. (Same would go for Jamie. I still haven’t watched the Highlanders.) I would have watched both before the Two Doctors, at least.
First actual first Doctor episode I would have watched would have been the Unearthly Child, but without the caveman episodes, since I remember watching a PBS special with 1 episode of each of all 7 Doctors. Not airing the full serials was an odd decision…
My introduction to Six was through The Lives of Captain Jack vol. 2 episode 1: Piece of Mind, which is certainly a weird start. I’ll definitely need to revisit it once I finish Six’s era, as I recall being intrigued by the story but too confused by the Jack/Doctor swap to properly enjoy it.
I’m kinda boring when it comes to encountering companions for the first time. Nearly all of mine were in their first appearances. I probably was introduced to Ace first, as I do remember my Mum watching Who when I was a kid in the late 80s, but there will be no way for me to confirm which episode. I know the first companion I had a crush on was Sarah Jane.
Have to admit that other than Ian, Barbara, and Susan, I pretty much met 1+2’s companions in random order. 4 on were probably in the episodes they were introduced in. Not sure on when I met 3’s companions, because I’m not sure I watched those in order as much originally.
Edit: I probably did meet Ben + Polly in the War Machines, though. Might have met Dodo in that one too, honestly.
i’m not sure it’s all that odd, but when i first watched doctor who it was on netflix but the s4 specials were filed separately, so i went on to s5 without realizing i’d skipped anything. i thought we didn’t actually see ten regenerate into eleven–i thought it happened offscreen. and then i saw gifs of it and got really confused!
I don’t know if this counts as odd, but my introduction to Two’s era was The War Games. I watched it all in one or two days, and I haven’t watched any of his other serials since* haha.
*I liked TWG and have nothing against Two. I just have a difficult time getting motivated to watch the classic serials.
Exactly the same for me
Only other 2 story I’ve seen was The Mind Robber and that was because of Tales
@EvenstarSystem’s first Tegan story was her last (Resurrection of the Daleks), which ends with her effectively fleeing the TARDIS randomly at the end of the episode.
I think I met both Leela and Romana through Gallifrey before I first watched a tv episode of either of them as far as I remember.
I still haven’t seen any tv episodes with Leela in it. (I swear I will get to it some day)
This just reminded me of the fact that for the longest time Netflix was just totally missing Planet of the Dead for no apparent reason
i think it was missing all four when i first watched, and then the specials were filed separately, and then they got filed with the rest of the show. of course this is back when my siblings and i were watching with the netflix app on our wii.
I joined Doctor Who through ponies, I was technically already in the fandom before I first watched it! (due to personal physical problems I could’nt really watch it until later)
Some people have mentioned C’rizz, I encountered him first through his last Main Range story, Absolution. Not a recommended way of going about things but I was new to the audios and didn’t realize what I was doing at the time.
