Thank you for listening! It’s just a nice silly pop culture-y puzzle/game show with a lot of music and laughs, it’s very fun to make

It definitely sounds like it.

I have this morning just caught up on The Artisan Who Made Me which is all about magic in the modern world and the people who are trying to live their lives without being hunted down for it, and it has a lot of Jewish mythology woven into it which I’m finding really interesting. It started a bit slowly but I’m really getting into it now - recommend!

I’ve been enjoying the old time radio drama X Minus One.

Listened to the first Carry On Up the Podcast about Carry on Sergeant after @monkeyshaver’s recommendation and it was excellent. I’m not a huge fan of podcasts that go over an hour but the easy chat between Mike and Susan made the time fly by. It’s been a while since I watched Sergeant but they managed to bring all the scenes back into my mind and make some really interesting points and comparisons.

Glad you enjoyed it, & yep Mike & Susan are so good as presenters.

Guess I’ll mention Totalus Rankium here. They’re one of the so-called “Rexypods”. That term comes from a podcast called Rex Factor, where the hosts go through all the monarchs of England and then rank each of them using various categories and then at the end they check to see who is the most interesting. This spawned the Rexypod format, with others doing podcasts in the same style but with other groups of people, examples include:

  • Pontifacts (The Popes of the Catholic Church, I follow this one closely too)
  • Battle Royale (French Monarchs)
  • The Spanish ArPODa (Monarchs of what is today Spain, from the Visigoths to the current modern country of Spain)
  • Tsar Power (Rulers of Russia from Rurik to the present day)
  • Ranking '76 (Figures of the American Old West)
  • The list goes on…

Totalus Rankium consists of Rob and Jamie and they have done three different podcasts. The first one is on the Roman Emperors, with season 1 being on everyone from Augustus to Theodosius I and the emperors of Western Rome. The second season is on the emperors of Eastern Rome AKA the Byzantine Empire. Most of it is found on Podbean (S2 is also on Spotify). I have listened a bit but there are so many episodes.

Second one is on the American Presidents from Washington to 45 (they finished it during 46’s term). I got introduced to Totalus Rankium with this one and caught up with it just in time for the last few presidents.

Third one is on the pirates from the Golden Age of Piracy, specifically the ones from “Captain Charles Johnson”'s A General History of the Pyrates, minus the ones who have been deemed fictional. They only recently finished all the regular episodes and will start doing the knockout rounds to get to the winner soon.

The next one they have planned is on the Holy Roman Emperors, from Charlemagne to Francis II.

Thoroughly enjoyed Carry On Up the Podcast talking about Carry On Nurse. Even though I didn’t rate the film much, their infectious enthusiasm for it made me wonder if I have underrated it.

This is the sort of recommendation I needed to know existed.

PS: Nurse has never been high on my picks either.

This is a list of audio drama podcasts.

Here is a horror audio drama podcast I used to listen all the time, Ominous Thrill. The quality is amazing, the writing is often very good.

Note that it has very mature themes ranging from sex to graphic violence so I’m spoilering it:

Edge of Sleep - Imagine much of the world’s population dies after falling asleep. A select few are awake. The quality is really good and it also has a great TV show:

One of my favorite horror audio dramas set in the Svalbard done found-footage style. An ancient evil lurks beneath the ice:

A good sci-fi audio drama podcast with a compelling mystery:

A dark dystopian sci-fi audio drama podcast involving military technology, lost humanity, etc:

Compromised is a lighter cyberpunk audio drama podcast set in futuristic Philly. I’ve only listened to an episode but it’s pretty good!

I haven’t listened to Alice isn’t Dead yet but a lot of people tell me it’s good. It also has a cool live party game.

The Strata I hear is very good - I’ve only listened to the sample but it’s a well-done and highly regarded dystopian sci-fi audio drama podcast about a guy that needs to do dirty deeds to stay alive. It has very Cyberpunk RPG/Shadowrun vibes.

I have a ton of these audio drama podcasts, some full cast, some single narrator. One of the joys of having an audiobookshelf is having all my BF, audiobooks, and podcasts in one application. Plus I love being able to download new podcast episodes manually with a click or automatically on release.

Now I’m curious, what series is it?

Great podcast. A blind content creator interviews a bunch of different people from various backgrounds and people who have disabilities, focusing on what’s not talked about and their stories

Accidentally listened to all of Null/Void today which was very very good. All about AI and exploitative companies, very well written and acted with excellent production all round for an indie podcast. Recommend!

Been a bit of a flurry of ‘I think you’ll find’ in light of this BBC Sounds documentary:

But Jonathan Morris is refuting some of what we thought we knew about ‘the strike’…

Hey hey ! For context : I’m about to have my first kid (like, reaaaal soon) and I want our home to become a no screen home. Because of that I’ve scoured around to stock pile a ton of audio dramas to listen to (explaining my presence here, and me listening to a bunch of Big Finish !).

I’m gonna look through the previous posts here, but if anyone wants to recommend their absolute favourite Radio Shows/audio dramas I’m all ears ! For context, and to give something back to the forum, here are some of my favs :

  • Joe Frank : moody, unique, absurd, atmospheric, funny, memorable… I ADORE him. You can listen to his show by paying a subscription on his official website, but if you want a taste of his work, you can listen to a 20min chunk of one of my favourite episode of his, Mountain Rain, with this link https://hearingvoices.com/2012/06/hv137-in-the-mountains/ (it’s an archive of a public broadcast NPR show about mountains, so no copyright infringement ; the Joe Frank bit starts at the 30:50 mark)
  • ZBS Media : a mix of genre fiction (sci-fi with Ruby Gumshoe, adventure/detective with Jack Flanders…) with formal experimentation, high concepts, mystical esotericism, and incredible sound design. If you go on their website you can subscribe to a one month free trial without having to give any credit card info :ok_hand: I’d recommend listening to Mojo’s Cafe (people going to a moody cafe to explain their dreams to the titular Mojo) or Jack Flander’s “Dreams of X” series (pick your fav country, and get lost in the soundscapes and oneiric dialogues)
  • MindWebs : a sci-fi anthology series, with a BANGER selection of stories and music, read by an incredible MC (Michael Hanson). His entire run has been archived, for free, on the Internet Archive with his expressed consent : MINDWEBS - Michael Hanson's official tape archive : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive
  • The BBC’s 1989 Sherlock Holmes adaptation : Clive Merrisson is the goat. It’s public radio material, so it’s easy to find online.
  • The Truth : a contemporary short story anthology. Sometimes slice of life, sometimes genre fiction, but always INCREDIBLY well written and often super touching. It’s available on every podcast app. If you want to check out one of the most intense and beautiful things I’ve ever listened to I’d check out You Are Not Alone (but be careful : take the content warnings on the episode description and at the start of the broadcast seriously) You're Not Alone — The Truth
