Nobody's Reviews Catalogue

What it says on the title. Just making a post so I can put links to my reviews in the TG in one place. For the moment I’ll just list the ones I have written, but I’ll organize the post better later.

Gonna use this topic as a sort of diary and for elaboraring my thoughts on the long game.

I came back to what I call Project: Blue Box yesterday, when I finished reading the Telos Novella “Time and Relative”. I have put a review up in the Guide and you can find a link in the first post, under “Season 000”.

I’m working through Doctor Who chronogically-ish. Meaning I divided the ranges I want to focus on by seasons after putting these stories somewhat in order. It’s not really a rigid chronology but more like the order I think working through it all will be most enjoyable.

And with Time and Relative done, I just finished the solo Susan portion of it (I’m skipping the short trips for this project, although there is two bangers I would put in this era - Indian Summer and The Five O’Clock Shadow). I have thoughts.

It was wildly inconsistent, chronolically wise. Which was to he expected, of course. The Beginning is the first adventure the Doctor and Susan have after leaving Gallifrey, but Frayed was written to be their first time meeting humanity - but they do meet humans in The Beginning. The characters degree of knowledge about Earth vary greatly, even more so if you do add the short trips.

I did read quite a bit of the short stories before changing the project to not include them and make my life easier, and it was weird how many stories Susan was just an afterthought. That’s not how it feels if you include only the Companion Chronicles and the books, tho - mostly because, with the exception of Frayed, ithey are all told from her perspective.

For the most part, it’s a good time to be Susan. The Beginning is nice enough; The Sleeping Blood poses an interesting moral question for her even though I wish it was better executed; she is main piece moving the narrative in The Alchemists (except she is not); Quinnis puts her in an engaging horror thriller and Time and Relative is a fantastic character piece.

She does not feature that much in Frayed, but it’s a good novel nonetheless. From a character-wise point of view, it’s a really good first perspective on how the Doctor is viewed by outsiders.

It’s also an era extremely connected to Earth and humanity - to a degree I find weird if, again, you include the short trips. Almost every single story is set on Earth or feature humans, it almost feels like the TARDIS can’t travel to another planets. Which I find stupid. The authors are so focused on setting up them wanting to stay in London for the status quo of An Unearthly Child that we almost never get that wonder of visiting other places. There is a bit of a time skip between Frayed and The Sleeping Blood in which Susan mentions they have been travelling for quite some time already that I think could fit some more high sci-fi tales.

I do have written reviews for The Alchemists and Quinnis, but I think I may have not translated them yet. I’l post them whenever I do. Next is Classic Who season one.

What Hunters of Earth from the Destiny of the Doctor miniseries? It takes place once the Doctor and Susan are at Coal Hill, but before An Unearthly Child. I also believe the River story An Unearthly Woman takes place before the show.

Because it’s part of a longer storyline, I’ll listen to it when I reach the most recent Doctor of that. So, Eleven. I’m probably gonna do the same for every Doctor Who event, as if they’re their own special season.

As for River I’ll only add the spin-offs when I feel they become relevant in the chronology; for River it’s after the Library.

I finally translated the missing reviews from the solo Susan and the First Doctor adventures - The Alchemists and Quinnis.

The review I wrote for the Alchemists is one I’m very proud of, in my humble opinion the best I’ve ever written so far alongside The Beginning. So I’m happy to finally be sharing it here in the Guide.
