To be fair, most post-S1 Slitheen stories I’ve seen ignore that part
<cancels 9th Doctor & Rose BF order> lol
Just properly catching up on this thread after the news broke yesterday while I was out - the cheek!
I’ll admit that, looking back, 9/Rose wasn’t my favourite era - even though at the time it was the most exciting thing in the world ever. I had a slight issue with how the Doctor didn’t seem hugely proactive in the stories and it usually fell to other characters to ‘solve’ the problem (Cathica, Nancy, Pete, Rose, Mickey, Gwyneth). I’ve obviously rewatched stories since then and thoroughly enjoyed them so look forward to these stories although maybe with less enthusiasm than others are expressing.
I’d much prefer a new ‘season’ and I’ll be interested to see if the ‘facilitator’ aspect of 9 is emphasised in the stories.
It would be great to see Nine and Rose tackle a classic monster—like the Zygons or Krynoids or Sontarans or something.
And the Slitheen feel like a must. We know that later Slitheen managed to develop their technology to a point where their skin suits didn’t do farting noises…
And there are probably mostly original monsters here, but of the RTD variant.
Also hoping for a Christmas-themed story for December.
Oh, and the historicals! Which celebrities and eras are we going to hear?
All they need to do is a pure historical and they got my money!
But yeah all seems very exciting, will be interesting to see what returning and new Elements we will get here!
They tend to try to make the stories as close to the TV era as possible, so I don’t think we should hold out hope for a pure historical, sadly
It’ll be a historical with them meeting some famous person from the past or getting involved in some major event to stop an alien invasion.
Probably, but one can dream, eh? (I am delusional )
I’d think it would be good to have a few stories breaking away from being as close to the TV Era as possible, while I do like them, I think occasionally one Story that breaks from it somehow is always pleasant to see
That’s right! They have 12 episodes, so there’s room for some experimentation! They could go to The Land of Fiction!
Is it too much to hope for a detour into The Dark Times and the Time Lord Victorious event with Vampire Rose
Yes, yes it probably is
I’m much the same with the era not being my favourite, even at the time I didn’t properly relax until Dalek. Rose has this reputation for being an amazing opening episode but it’s not my memory of it. I felt a little deflated after it and people I watched it with who weren’t fans like me did pretty much go, “What the hell was that **** you just made us watch?”
Now, it isn’t that bad and I do think some undergraduate bravado exaggeration was playing a part when they said that, but I was nervous for the next few weeks, I have to say.
However, the Ninth Doctor was instantly great for me. And Rose was paired wonderfully with him so even though the first half of the series at the time of broadcast was an uneasy experience for me, now that it’s 20 years old and the pressure to restart the series is no longer there, I can have a much better time with it.
Having Chris back as the Doctor is always something I’ll marvel at, having him back with Billie is an extra sheen of loveliness. As much as I’ve enjoyed his BF range so far, I feel that 3 separate seasons’ worth of pre-Rose stuff is sort of enough and, because there’s now 20 years’ distance, this is what actually feels weirdly like new territory.
So despite being an uneasy traveller for the first half of Series One back in 2005 who adored the Ninth Doctor straight away and was hugely impressed with Billie Piper and fell hugely into step with the second half of the series before not taking to the subsequent Doctor’s run and therefore really missing Eccleston, this really does feel like the “more of Series One” I desperately wanted after it was over.
We barely knew it and now we get a reunion with it.
Probably easy enough to do, as Rose never met the Zygons onscreen anyway, so feasible that she could have met them with the Ninth Doctor.
There’s a short story called The Beast of Babylon that fills that gap quite nicely!
I don’t have a wishlist as such, just strong stories, but I wouldn’t mind another reunion with the Brigadier. Rose meeting Sarah the way she did in School Reunion and the drama there sort of precludes (in my opinion) her meeting any other classic companions in any of these but the Brig isn’t exactly in that sphere. It would also be quite nice for him to see that, following the two-parter where he did meet the Ninth Doctor, the Doctor did in fact find someone else to travel with.
I am a giddy fan though so I would be all over a 9/13 meeting, I just doubt they’ll do it.
Classic monsters the Ninth Doctor and Rose could meet? Zygons are a good shout and I think they could also cross paths with the Weeping Angels, Judoon or the Rutans (no Sontarans for a bit, thanks).
I know many think differently but I think the Nine/Eleven/Twelve/Union/Collective would be fun for this Doctor to meet but it’s not likely to happen given the nature of the Doctor Feeling No Time Lords “In 'Ere” at this point.
Oh I’d love 9 Vs Weeping Angels! Especially when so many BF angel stories are strong
In my heart of hearts I’ve always wanted 9 Vs The War Master but as you say it would go against him being alone as the last remaining Time Lord so I’ve accepted it could never happen
This made me wonder if they will have any sort of crossover between the 9DAs and 13DAs, even something as small as a throwaway line or the same monster showing up in both ranges. It could be fun seeing as the two ranges become a sort of new monthly range for a short while. They could even have a story where one part is told in the 13DAs and the other in the 9DAs (or the other way around).
Yeah I’d enjoy that. I think they’re fully aware some listeners will not be listening to both ranges and only opt for the one so they’d still have to stand alone to some degree but I wouldn’t mind a bit of connective tissue, that would be a lot of fun.
For those considering this and 13 being a new kind of Monthly Range, if someone said in 2021, “What if it came back but was Eccleston and Whittaker?” would you have believed them?
Big Finish consistently providing us with unlikely delights!
Ooh yes that would be great.
I predict it will happen. Probably more wishful thinking on my part.
It’s a shame Eccleston isn’t keen on Multidoctor stories cause I’d love to see a 9 equivalent of Out of Time, with or without Rose
