I’ve been working on a brand new feature and a new section to the site… it’s not finished but is ready to show off!
Characters were previously just a little filter added to stories, but now they have their own pages which will eventually be fulled fleshed out with loads of information!
Searching for a character name (using the main “Search the Whoniverse” search bar) [example] will reveal the character, and clicking it will show a filtered list of all their stories. Soon this page will also include details like image, description, species, quotes, TARDIS Wiki link, and more.
There is also a brand new Characters Page which lets you sort and filter all the characters we have on the site - filter by character type (companions, villains, real-life characters), species, and different affiliations. Even the Doctors are here! More coming soon!
Adding characters to stories used to be something I only did for recurring characters, but with this update we will add characters for everyone! (Eventually). So yes, even Bill Filer now has a page!
I’ve just given myself loads more work to do, as there are so many images and descriptions to add, not to mention the extra characters… but hopefully I’ll also build the tools to help you help me as well
Enjoy! Let me know what you think, or if there are any other features, filters, affiliations, species, etc you think I should add!
For example the one I have of Mel is a really old one. I don’t think it represents her in The Legend of Ruby Sunday.
So I was thinking of character pictures for the companions to change depending on the story they are on, as the character changes. But what to show as their main photo?
Still thinking how best to do this and not make a huge amount of extra work, but does that sound good?
I think the main photo should represent the character as they are in the most of their (tv) stories. So like a classic companion that has a handful of appearances in the new show should still have an old picture
It makes sense. You could have a photo gallery that in a lot of cases only has one photo, mark one of them as the default photo, and then have the ability for episodes to override the default if appropriate.
It is the sort of thing that you’d mostly use for characters whose look changed between appearances (such as most classic companions who returned to new who). Or in some cases, just because it’s an iconic character you want to have a rogues gallery of, like the Master…
This is a hard one, especially for SJS who have had big representation in both classic and new. I think that the main picture should be from the first big representation (not just first because we want grown-up Amy, not child Amy) but a photo gallery would be nice and different story picture is also a nice feature.
Sarah Jane is definitely one of these cases where in her series you want her as seen in that series, but in classic who, you want a classic who picture…
A gallery does seem fun but of course DW has to be complicated about things like this I agree with @Jae, the main photo should be representative of what they are most known for.
I do really like the idea of rating and favouriting too!
I must say that I don’t like the idea of rating characters. Feels too random to me. A personal average of characters’ stories with rating distribution would be much more my way of doing it.
