Mostly Hope - A Thirteenth Doctor Thread

Being announced as the next person to take up the mantle in July 2017 after the Wimbledon finale, Jodie Whittaker was the first woman to be cast as The Doctor.

Her tenure lasted five years, spanning three seasons and a year of specials, and featured the creation of a bunch of new monsters (e.g. the Pting, the Lupari, and The Solitract), the return of some classic friends and foes (e.g. Jack Harkness, the Judoon, and the Weeping Angels), and the reinvention of some truly classic foes, breathing new life into monsters we know and love (e.g. the Spy Master, the Cyber-Lords, the security drone Daleks).

She also featured in many EU appearences, for example:

  • DWM comics
  • Doctor Who Redacted
  • Titan Comics
  • Team TARDIS Diaries
  • BBC Books

And many more…

And with Big Finish having acquired the license to use things from her era, we’re soon to be seeing more of her era than ever, between the recently released The Fugitive Doctor, Call Me Master, and the latest Classic Doctors, New Monsters set, and the upcoming Thirteenth Doctor Adventures.

It should be noted that we do already have a thread for Thirteenth Doctor/Chibnell Era Positivity, this thread is not intended to replace that thread, or to be a thread devoted purely to criticism or negativity surrounding the era. This thread is intended for general discussion of the era and its expanded materials, containing both positivity and critique. If you don’t to see any criticism towards the era (due to the overwhelming negativity a lot of it received at tie of airing), that’s completely fair, there’s nothing wrong with that at all, that’s why the other thread exists, just ignore this one!!

Some good, some bad

Will say, I think the 13 Dalek stories are all at the very least pretty solid, where near every other doctor has had one I think was a bit of a dud

Wait, have you seen PotD already then?

Why does 13 have daleks in 90% of her specials?
Real missed opportunity to explore more villains there

Yeah it was an unusual choice.

Chibnall knew that Daleks bring in the ā€œnormsā€ and so put them in the specials and left them out of the main show.

I personally think Daleks are best in two-parters, otherwise they are dispatched with too quickly without any cliffhanger, and it makes them seem weak.

I think the way the Dalek specials are connected was a missed opportunity to actually do a year-long cliffhanger!

Imagine if instead of seeing at the start of Revolution how the Dalek survived, we saw it at the end of Resolution, and then it was a looming threat until next year.

I quite like it, Resolution, Revolution, and Eve forming a kind of ā€˜Dalek Trilogy’, and doing them as specials lets them be seperate from the seasons, so you can give more of a focus to them

And then they’re also in Power because that’s a celebration of the show, daleks, doctors, the master, cybermen, companions, fanservice galore

I feel Legend of the Sea Devils is incredibly overhated.

By no means is it a great episode, but it is nowhere near as bad as people have said.

I’ve always thought the sea devils were crap - Can’t really explain why.
Just every time they appear across who i groan

This Joanna Lumley erasure! /j

I’m finally watching her for the first time now. I’m up to the last two episodes of s12, and I’m really not looking forward to bidding Graham and Ryan farewell. (I do realize they’re in the books, but me, read? It’s less likely than you might think.)

Series 12 for me is not nearly as strong as series 11. There’s nothing bad, just nothing I especially enjoy. I guess Fugitive and Praxeus have been the highlights for me.

I remember when Jodie was announced as the new Doctor, I hadn’t so much as heard of Broadchurch, so I only associated her with Beverly from St Trinian’s! (An extremely underrated and overhated duology, even despite the presence of El*n’s worst ex-wife.)

Gah, and I’m always the first to point this out when other people do it too!!
