Medium Atomic Weights Are Available: A Sapphire & Steel Thread

How would one describe Sapphire & Steel? Many of us love shows about people investigating the paranormal, in S&S those investigators are themselves paranormal beings. Time itself is the adversay & our duo often find objects from the past causing time to crack, or act in strange ways. Joanna Lumley & David McCallum are superb in the title roles, weird & otherwordly.

23 years after it ended Big Finish brought it back with Susannah Harker as Sapphire & David Warner as Steel in 3 seasons of audio drama. There have also been rumours & attempts to bring it back to TV, writer Ed Hime was attached at one point but it didn’t go anywhere.

This is definitely a series for people that favour the uncanny, where not everything is easily explained.

I absolutely love Sapphire and Steel. The original TV series was very good but there are a couple of stories that go on for far too many episodes. The Big Finish audio series is, unsurprisingly, superb. But then, if you put David Warner in something that’s bound to happen.

I need to listen to Series 2 and 3 which I snapped up when they suddenly appeared as download box sets long after BF had originally lost the licence.

For the curious, you can find Sapphire & Steel on the ITV Retro YouTube channel (possibly region locked?)

Works in UK & US! :star_struck: Btw, this is interesting.

I love this. Can’t wait to listen to the audio. I have this and Captain Scarlet on my list on AudioLog (yeah, I’m weird). I just need unlimited funds on Big Finish and I’ll be set!

We just want to know: why are the agents referred to as “elements” when Sapphire and Steel are both compounds!

I’ve watched all six TV serials and generally enjoyed them. Assignments II and IV are the best ones in my opinion.

Maybe I should rewatch a serial soon?

My favourite TV series of all time (sorry dr who…). The bizarre atmosphere is amazing, and I love how the main characters are also part of the strangeness and are more neutral than fully good. The BF audios are fantastic (at least S1, havent heard the other two yet).

I hope something happens with it some day, whether TV, more audios or books. There’s so much potential left over considering how few “elements” are ever met.

So I have actually been watching this this week bc I realised that I could and I am obsessed with them… they are such freaky weirdos and I adore them actually. I think this programme might be about to take over me body and soul for a little bit…

OK so first of all The Trap ending??? The Trap ending??? The Trap ending Explained? They’re just… trapped? There? Forever? I watched the entire last part embroidery hoop a needle in hand staring at the screen and not doing any sewing. Like this series has made me crazy.

So today I relistened to The Passenger on the bus. Which I also enjoyed all over again, if not more now that I am more well acquainted with my freaky weirdos who I love. I want to say that Susannah Harker and David Warner didn’t really bother me as different voices nnd this is true but also its just different innit? Like obviously they’re not the same people so they don’t sound the same, but I do think they play the roles really well and I think Harker manages to get across that sort of detached alienness that I really like about Sapphire.

Like Adventure Four on the television was the worst one because Sapphire was too normal. She is best when she is a completely freaky weirdo. I loved on TV when Lumley would do that very vacant kind of look, the sort of stare into the middle distance as stuff was going on around her like she was taking it all in and analysing it but not really reacting on an emotional level.

So you can imagine the kind of reaction I had to Daisy Chain. Which I just finished. My full reaction to this - as Delta can attest to seeing as I just said a lot of swear words in his DMs - was holy ■■■■■■■ shit. They really just did all that? And I was having fun singing furniture furniture and being like ha I totally would listen to this knock off 90s goth band that they’ve made up for this audio. And then they did all that! And because I am very well adjusted and normal, I enjoyed it so so so much. If enjoy is the right word.

Like, I really enjoyed The Passenger and I thought it was a very good opening story to the concept that the audios are trying to do, which is slightly different from the TV series because on TV you kind of never really got the sense that they knew what they were talking about with regards to who Sapphire and Steel were or where they come from or what their missions were, and it didn’t really bother me that there wasn’t any quote unquote lore, but the audios definitely seem to want us to believe they exist in a more cohesive world. Which is also good. On audio, Time itself seems to be more the villain, or rather the perpetrator of the mishaps that are occurring. Time as a force seems to be more the enemy that they are pushing against as they try to, I don’t know, weave the webs of the universe into presumably an order that presumably whoever is in charge of them is dictating. Which again I guess happened The Trap, which was you know too little too late and then they ended it on that cliffhanger and it’s like bro who are these guys?? Who are these other freaky freaky guys who are trying to trap Sapphire and Steel?? Like who are they? Where did they come from?

Sapphire in The Trap does mention that other people are jealous of them and their freedom, which I suppose is why they get trapped in their freaky void forever, but it also seems to me that these other three weirdos are sent from slightly different masters to the ones that are in control of Sapphire and Steel. Who are they??

Maybe the audios will give me these answers. Or maybe not. In fairness actually, because I am a glutton for misery, I quite like The Trap as the ultimate ending for S&S now I’ve had a chance to sleep on it. There’s something quite… I don’t know hideous about taking these two timeless beings who can go anywhere and do anything and have their freaky mind powers and locking them in a room for eternity. I guess I’m just the kind of person who enjoys it when endings are miserable. So in a way I won’t mind it at all if all the audios are implied to be before that point, because I will be intrigued if that is the supposed end goal to see kind of how BF interpret the minimal fragments of lore that we do get and sprinkle them into the audios.

Anyway Daisy Chain really ruined my day :+1: these freaky weirdos have bewitched me body and soul and I am obsessed with themmmmmmmmmm

It’s kind of interesting poking around on wikipedia about the show. Peter J Hammond created the show and wrote most of the episodes.

He also was originally supposed to write “Paradise 5” for Doctor Who, and that made it to the Big Finish lost season. And he wrote “Small Worlds” and “From Out of the Rain” for Torchwood…

Andy Lane adapted Paradise 5 for Big Finish’s Lost Stories. It’s a good choice, with his background from the New Adventures novels.

Wow I didn’t even realise there was a thread for this but man am i glad. I’ve only recently started listening to them (literally yesterday with The Passenger) but I am very excited to continue. I do however feel that the first story was perhaps to close to just a doctor who story rather than a Sapphire & Steel story. I really hope the rest of the series can return to form because i so so so love this series.

The next episode is crazyyyy… I’ve been thinking about it all day since I listened last night

Some of the story resolutions are pretty dark, like in the original show. There’s a striking one where someone has to be lobotomised to prevent the threat recurring again.

Started listening to The School this morning - but got interrupted so didn’t get very far. Already trying to work out what sort of school this is that has 5-16 year olds in the same building…

Not a fan of The School. A very messy affair which didn’t seem to know what story it wanted to actually tell and muddled it’s school tropes something chronic which distracted me hugely. Very unfocussed and seemed to strive for shock factor rather than story as well as more or less sidelining S&S. And the ending didn’t feel earned (or make much sense either).

(Schools aren’t demolished if they fail an Ofsted!)

Hoping the next one - The Surest Poison - picks up.

It’s got Richard Franklin (although he sounds like he was recorded in a metal box and at a different time to the others).

Enjoyed The Surest Poison (don’t know why it’s called that though). Interesting timey shenanigans and a rather nice performance from Richard Franklin.

Now on to Water Like a Stone and this is the first appearance of Lisa Bowerman’s new element agent - Ruby. And she’s glorious! This one also has Nick Briggs in.

It’s a quote from an essay. “Tobacco, coffee, alcohol, hashish, prussic acid, strychnine, are weak dilutions: the surest poison is time.”
