I got this idea from a friend of mine! Basically, in this scenario we’ve been tasked with making a new monthly Doctor Who range.
Some ground rules:
1 - You must wait for 2 stories to be posted for you to send another (excluding the beginning! someone needs to continue after all!)
2 - Any Doctor 1-13, War, or Fugitive is fair game.
3 - Try to minimize multi-doctor stories.
4 - Try to build off previous posts if you can! Whether that be a new companion or a returning monster.
5 - Provide a episode title, Doctor, companion, and description of the plot. (It doesn’t have to be super long!)
6- Have fun!
I’ll start! Here’s an example! New Main Range 1 - Nightmare in Netscape Doctor: 1st Companions: Steven Description: The TARDIS lands in the late 90s, and investigate a new company named NetNav Industries. Their goal is to bring a sentient string of code to life, disguised as a new GPS. The “Digitarians” come to life, and Steven gets the idea to feed it garbage data, saving the day. After NetNav was exposed, their stocks plummeted, and they end up going bankrupt. The story ends with The Doctor and Steven leaving, but some of the Digitarians may have survived, and they might come back with a vengeance…
Sounds like a fun Idea! Let me try one.. (do feel free to correct if I did do anything wrong with it!)
New Main Range 2 - Left alone Doctor: 2nd Description: The Second Doctor is traveling alone in his TARDIS, after the Timelords took away his freedom. He is sent to a mysterious Planet, when he steps outside and looks around, he can barely see due to a terrible massive fog hiding everything. As he makes his way further, he uncovers the reason why he was sent. And it’s horrifying to him.
New Main Range 3 - Ships of the Desert Doctor: 8th Description: The Eighth Doctor and Lucie arrive in 1325 North Africa during Mansa Musa’s famous pilgrimage to Mecca. What follows is a pure historical akin to Marco Polo where the listener learns about the Mali Empire during its height.
Description: While traveling alone, the Fourth Doctor arrives on a tribal warrior planet called Trikl. He is captured and subsequently forced to fight as a gladiator for the evil Emperor Traklon. After winning his first two battles without using violence and relying only on dialogue (defeating one opponent by offering him jelly babies), he is then sent to fight against Monstap, a muscular warrior three meters tall with orange skin. After a heated battle, he manages to join forces with Monstap to escape from the evil Emperor and finally flees in the TARDIS with Monstap.
Description: Nyssa and Tegan are celebrating their 2nd wedding anniversary. They’re happily married, living on Traken, with their teenage son, Adric. Nyssa’s father, Tremas, is coming over in the afternoon, after his very important meeting with the new Keeper of Traken, a middle-aged man with dark curly hair who calls himself The Doctor. Not everything is perfect, however. Nyssa keeps being accosted by someone she’s never seen before, someone who keeps ranting about how the world is wrong, and only she can put it right.
What’s really going on: 5, Nyssa, and Tegan encountered a despot attempting to use a reality-warping artifact to bend the universe to their will. While attempting to stop this, the artifact accidentally imprinted on Nyssa and activated, reshaping reality, taking its cues from her deepest desires: Traken’s still around, Adric’s still alive, and she’s married to Tegan. The Doctor looks like 4 because that’s how he looked before her home was destroyed and everything went wrong. The only one not affected is the despot, because they’re properly wired into their machinery. We’re not ending this story with a mind-wipe. When reality is restored, The Doctor and Tegan remember everything. Tegan leaves this story knowing exactly how Nyssa feels about her
Description: The Doctor and Amy are aiming for a quiet fika in Stockholm, but instead land smack in the middle of a bank vault during a tense hostage situation. Something’s… off, though. The “robbers” don’t seem interested in money, and they’re far too polite for hardened criminals.
Soon, the truth unravels: the “robbers” are actually Hytroms, a peace-loving alien race trying (and failing) to rescue their kidnapped leader from the vault. With tempers flaring and confusion mounting, the Doctor and Amy rally the hostages and their alien captors to work together.
But there’s a twist: the kidnapper is hiding in plain sight among them… and the Doctor, Amy and the hostage work together to bring him down.
Description: The TARDIS is hijacked and taken to a planet called Hefal. The ship vanishes, and the Doctor finds himself face to face with the one responsible: the malevolent Time Controller, a renegade Founding Father of Gallifrey who has captured multiple Time Lords and their TARDIS in order to feed a central battery with temporal energy—thus preparing to unleash a destructive beam against Gallifrey itself.
The Doctor devises a way to escape and thwarts the plan, realizing he must destroy five pillars of the planet’s infrastructure to collapse the battery’s energy and reclaim the TARDIS. He senses that future versions of himself are present with him, so he sends out a telepathic message calling for their aid. Soon after, Jamie and the Doctor are taken by the planet’s statue-like guards. They manage to escape by persuading one of the guards, and the Doctor succeeds in destroying one of the pillars with Jamie’s help—trusting that four other versions of himself will bring down the remaining ones.
Description: After their countless Travels, the Doctor has become a legend around the Galaxy, so much so that now greedy Businessmen are taking his life story and turning it into Books, Merchandise and more without permission. Due to the fear that the Doctor might demand something in return, if he ever finds out, they start to copyright everything about the Doctor’s Life, which also affects the real World of the Doctor. Will Doctor Who and his trustworthy Companions find out what has happened? And will they find a way to enter into the Public Domain to further prevent this? Find out here!
New Main Range 9 - The Tunnel at the End of the Light
Doctor: 5
Companions: Nyssa and Tegan
Description: Following on from the brilliant NMR5: Her Heart’s Desire (oooh, who did that one? I bet she’s cute and hot), the Tardis is summoned to Karn. One of the sisterhood has taken too much from their communal source of power. Her greed has unbalanced everything, and the rest are powerless to stop her. Also, Tegan deals with internalized homophobia on the Planet Of The Women, where lesbianism is the default
Description: The Doctor and Monstap arrive on a heavily wooded planet, the canopy so thick the sky can’t be seen. Going between biodomes, The Doctor and Monstap must solve the mystery of the Wooden Beast, an unknown monster written in the journals of the crew who have died. It turns out the planet itself drove them mad, and there was no monster. The Doctor and Monstap have to find the TARDIS before it’s too late, and before they turn on eachother.
New Main Range 12 - Consequences of a Scarf in the Wrong Place Doctor: 7th Companion: Ace Description: Ace and the Doctor arrive on a planet that is partially destroyed, where its inhabitants live in a post-apocalyptic world. Ace and the Doctor are separated by a group of raiders; while Ace takes refuge with a peaceful community, the Doctor falls prisoner to a band of raiders who work by bringing supplies to a secret group of scientists attempting to repair the planet.
The scientists confess that this is a consequence of what happened in Logopolis. Ace, along with her group, eventually tracks down the scientists, and the Doctor finds a way to help them restore the planet. Afterwards, the Doctor departs in the TARDIS, not without first stating that Logopolis may have brutally altered the structure of several planets. partially destroying them, erasing them from existence, or perhaps even rendering them flat…
New Main Range 13 - Temple of DoomorTemple of Evil Doctor: 5th Companion: Turlough Description: The Doctor and Turlough arrive at the entrance to a sealed cavern city complex on an alien desert planet. A group of archeologists/treasure hunters are opening the entrance to uncover why the city was sealed. Inside, they discover that the city’s priest/scientists opened a portal to another dimension, accidentally releasing a great evil.
Description: A long time ago, the Kingdom was a glorious land of peace and prosperity, where good always triumphed over evil and wise monarchs ruled benevolently for the good of their subjects. That was before the arrival of the Dark Wizard, an ancient evil returned from the howling terror that existed before the birth of the Kingdom itself. The Dark Wizard was imprisoned by the noble champions, but the damage he inflicted on the Kingdom and its people persists. Even worse, his demonic servant still stalks the land, a monstrous creature with skin of flames - a monster known only as Monstap…
Full synopsis: After their defeat by the First Doctor, the Digitarians survive by lurking on the edges of the internet, eventually co-opting an abandoned fantasy MMO in the far future, developing a high fantasy civilization (with all the tropes and stereotypes that go with that kind of setting). When the Doctor and Monstap arrive, the sheer size and complexity of the Doctor and the TARDIS irreparably damage the reality of the Digitarians’ digital world. They capture and imprison the Doctor, attempting to force him to fix the damage, but Monstap escapes. After an indeterminate amount of time on the run, he’s able to free the Doctor with the help of an average Digitarian (who resembles a hobbit-type creature) who longs to escape the Kingdom, and together they journey back to the Kingdom’s capital to return to the TARDIS and escape. Overcoming the Digitarian champions on the way, the Doctor and Monstap escape in the TARDIS, but the Doctor admits he doesn’t know whether the TARDIS was the only thing holding the Kingdom together, and the Digitarians’ world might have collapsed completely without it. Unbeknownst to either of them, their Digitarian helper stowed away in the TARDIS!
I wanted to build on some of the previous entries with this one, so this is another story that features Monstap, but also a stealth sequel to Nightmare in Netscape! It’s also a very high fantasy, Lord of the Rings-esque concept, because I’m always surprised Doctor Who hasn’t done that yet and I thought Monstap would lend himself well to that kind of setting and plot.
Very true, although it’s done in such a fresh way I kind of forget that it’s taking inspiration from those things (for example, I totally forgot that it has elves and wizards!). For my own story concept, I was very much thinking of leaning into the tropes of the genre, rather than repurposing them as Hooklight does.
