Last Place I Expected To See You

We were watching the two part finale of 9-1-1 Lone Star last night and watched a guy packing a box before heading to his bunker in the garden (the guy was him from Jurassic Park - the one who steals the eggs, but that’s not important). In later dialogue he says that a neighbour’s child better like watching Doctor Who whilst they wait out the apocalypse (an asteroid is heading for Austin, Texas, obvs).

Was he packing Doctor Who DVDs into his box?

Rewind to check and YES - actual Doctor Who DVDs on 9-1-1

The Pirate Planet, Beneath the Surface box set and a Jodie Whitaker set (possibly Flux).

The Power of Kroll!

Some Toms - The Ark in Space and I think The Armageddon Factor

I mean, obviously not a proper fan because they’re not in the correct order…but still!

Where have you been surprised to see a Doctor Who reference?

Dennis Nedry has Doctor Who DVDs?!?!?

I don’t think that’s a Whittaker set though

I always like the random 4 cameos in Futurama and The Simpsons

Do US releases use the Chibnall logo on other seasons? Is it maybe the 60th specials?

Looks like this set

It is not surprising that there are Doctor Who references in RTD’s show Queer as Folk, which aired in the 90’s, but the sheer volume was hilarious to me. There was a point where the theme started playing (during a sex scene, no less) and I thought for a second I’d turned on the wrong show.

Yeah, looks like it

Seeing the door painted to look like a TARDIS at That’s Entertainment (comic book and record shop) in Worcester, Massachusetts was a nice surprise! I even got two Doctor Who comic books there!

I thought the Strikethrough logo became the default for all releases from 2018 until the new diamond logo in 2023, not just in the US, but everywhere. The Collection uses it (thankfully decided to stick with consistency for the set), Big Finish used it, etc.

That particular DVD set was released in October 2018, from looking it up.

There’s a spinoff of Father Brown that basically parodies Doctor Who in an episode, the ep is called Professor Y

Community introduces a “british sci fi series that’s been running since 1964” called Inspector Spacetime! It starts as a one off bit, but then you get multiple episodes with “Blorgons” (definitely not Daleks), and they even go to a convention where they dress as The Inspector and his Constable. Matt Lucas even shows up in the episode before his role as Nardole! At one point, the main character wears an “Inspector” outfit as his “fancy” clothing, which I have done on multiple occasions!

(There’s even a bit where they mention the lady inspector, which everyone hates (“Not because she’s a woman, but because she sucks”). I thought it was a lame jab at Jodie… then I realized the episode came out in 2013. Damn.)

There’s a lot more references I could talk about from Community, (including the American remake that gets created in the show (https://youtu.be/znz3rXKAffQ?si=BH5SGBbRxx4o-8E2) but it’s cool to see it get so much love! HIGHLY recommend the show for anyone who likes comedy!

Yeah, Inspector Spacetime is great.

Funniest place I’ve seen a Doctor Who reference was at a computer repair shop I went to, where the guy painted the doors to the back workshop to look like the TARDIS, and behind them on the far wall was a cardboard cutout of the Tenth Doctor

There’s a Tardis at the National Tramway Museum at Crich

Doctor Who got referenced in The Rookie, which would be pretty minor if it wasn’t for who made the reference. To give you some context for people who don’t watch the show, Tim Bradford is a real stereotypical man’s man, he spends his weekends watching sports and drinking beer, and is a real jerk of a training officer, so to have him just out-of-the-blue reference the TARDIS was amazing.

Scene for further context (sorry you get it in Shorts form):

Colin Baker almost ten years prior to becoming the Doctor played Paul Merroney in a show called The Brothers, and there are a lot of unintentional call-backs call-forwards? to his run as Six, from Kate O’Mara’s character being his constant “enemy” in The Bros (to her being his enemy in Mark of the Rani); to him nearly quoting the same lines in both shows, and other little references.

Also, inversely to the OP, I watched Time-Flight specifically because I’d seen that Richard Easton (the guy in those bottom gifs, who is Paul’s confidant of sorts) was the pilot. I thought that was neat. The actor who played Jobel (Revelation of the Daleks) also appeared in The Brothers for a few episodes, playing another slimeball. The guy who played Harry Sullivan also appeared for an episode or two. Liza Goddard was in both shows.

Also, to be more on topic, one of the characters was shown reading Age of Chaos in the show Drop the Dead Donkey. I’ve never seen this show, nor do I know what it is outside of being some comedy from the 1990s, but it’s awesome that out of all the comics they could have picked, they picked Colin’s!

I think somebody showed me a clip a while ago from Family Guy/American Dad(? Couldn’t really tell both have a very similar Artstyle and I don’t watch either), where we see a Stadium filled with people dressed up, some of which were dressed up in the iconic fourth Doctor look. But that’s less surprising, more surprising was to see somebody dressed up as 8!
