Is Torchwood worth watching?

Hello again!

Well apparently I love getting spammed, so here’s a new question.

Basically, is Torchwood a good show? I mean, is it worth the watching? Cos, like most people here I suppose, I positively adore Captain Jack Harness, so I’d love to see him having the first part in some other stories, but at the same time, I’m scared it might not work really well, as the character is even more likeable because of his dynamic with the Doctor, and the differences between them.

Do you guys mostly love that show??

Yes and no. Some people love TW, and some don’t like it. I personally don’t like the first two seasons, but season 3 is really good. It is aimed at a bit older audience, but I would say that seasons one and two are more like a horny teenager than an adult.

In general, I would say that Sarah Jane Adventure is a better spin-off, but the third season of Torchwood is really good.

I’d say it’s a mixed bag, but with only four series, it’s worth giving a go.

In my view, Series 1 is very mixed and struggles to find its identity, but has a strong finale. It’s very much “let’s just sex things up and here’s a bunch of swear words” – it’s trying too hard to be “adult and gritty”, but it has moments of fun.

Series 2 comes with more confidence – the show takes itself less seriously, relaxes a bit, and there are some good character arcs and journeys in there. Another solid finale, barring some questionable acting.

Series 3, Children of Earth, I would argue is one of the best stories within the entire Doctor Who universe. Like, ever. So good, in so many ways.

Series 4, less so – it drags a little, and I’m not keen on the direction. I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to drop any spoilers, but Series 4 is quite a different beast to what came before it.

I’d say give it a go, see what you think. Series 3 is definitely worth a watch though. You could watch it standalone, although you’d miss some context and general worldbuilding that Series 1 and 2 bring.

Kommt drauf an. Ich fand es beim Gucken ganz gut, aber ich glaube nicht, dass ich mir die Serie nochmal angucken werde, so sehr hat sie mich nicht beeindruckt. Aber sie ist es auf jeden Fall wert, ausprobiert zu werden

Echoing what everyone is saying, its worth a go.

I think the first series is probably the weakest and it does take a few epsiodes to get going. The lows can be low, but the highs are incredible.

There are a couple of naff episodes but then again they appear in every show
I’d highly recommend Torchwood, like a few people have said it’s not for everyone and definitely a product of its time, but I think that adds to the charm
And I am the biggest series four defender, I think Miracle Day was brilliant (mostly)

I also like season 4. Much more than season 1 and 2.

I have mixed feelings:sob: I like it but do I love it? I’m not sure. But overall I did enjoy it’s stories

I’m in the same boat to be honest. There are something’s I liked and something’s i didn’t. There were whole plots I felt were very unnecessary but some storylines I really enjoyed.

Okayy thanks! I suppose it wasn’t easy to find the right direction in the beginning, an adult version of Doctor Who without the Doctor is quite a bet ^^”

I’ll take a look at the Sarah Jane adventures some day too, I keep stumbling upon some of its episodes soo

Often tries way too hard to show it’s the adult version:sob:

I would also generally warn that, because of the nature of the show, it is more adult – sex, gratuitous violence, blood, gore, etc. Just in case anyone (or OP) needs any content warnings going in. (I imagine a brief glance at the stories on TARDIS Guide will give good indication of trigger warnings, etc. if necessary.)

Oh okay, I think I can see the kind of mood this is. A good finale is always great to discover though! Sad about the acting, even if in the “real” DW show, acting isn’t always really good, in the first series of the NuWho at least.

Okayy, that’s probably what I’ll do. Maybe give a go to the very first episodes, but if I can’t manage to really get into it for the moment, I’ll skip to the third series directly, I’m curious to take a look.

Thanks for the answer!

Thanks for the warning, it’s okay with me given I’m used to David Fincher’s films since I’m…well around 12, but thanks all the same, it’s always better to warn in advance. ^^ (Good idea!)
