ICMG - A 'Counter-Measures' Thread

Assassination Games is set between Remembrance and Threshold—I think you can jump in without listening to any CM stuff at all. That’s certainly what I did! (Although I promise I’ll get round to CM eventually @sircarolyn !!)

Great! Then that one goes next on my list

Yes @nyssaoftraken is right! However I would suggest you definitely listen to Assassination Games at the very least before CM s4 because there are some plot things in s4 that really rely on knowing what happens in AG that they don’t really tell you about. Of course.

I’ve just listened to Assassination Games! Really enjoyed it, but I think I might need another listen to get the full plot, mainly because it always takes me a bit until I’m attuned to new voices and can actually keep all characters apart. Some good turns in here, and I’ll actually continue with season one soon (ish, probably, who knows what I’ll get distracted with, but it’s on my list I promise)

I need to give this a relisten. Really enjoyed it first time round. Though New Counter-Measures wasn’t quite as good.

I’ve heard that a lot and it kind of makes me wary of moving into those (despite having bought them all). I love the first four series a lot.

I will agree that NewCM doesn’t quite reach the highs of the ‘original’ but I definitely don’t think that means one should write it off altogether. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, I do love NCM. Troubled Waters and The Hollow King are two of my favourite CM episodes and Lady Clare is just brilliant :smiling_face_with_three_hearts::smiling_face_with_three_hearts::heart_eyes: There are weak episodes in there and I can’t say I’m a huge fan of The Movellan Manouevre/The Dalek Gambit as an ending, but if you love the gang it is worth listening to

Its still worth listening to & I would not call it bad. Just doesn’t reach the high bar set by CM.

@sircarolyn, you might be interested in these episodes from The Sirens of Audio podcast.

I want to say I think I’ve listened to the Karen one, but I can’t remember. Time to listen againnnn

Just listened to The Forgotten Village, really enjoyed it. A great story for Allison especially the scene where she confronts her dad. Rachel also gets a really strong scene at the end here.

I really must get back to CM. Still need to listen to all the New stories!

She makes my heart absolutely explode in that one. Brilliant episode, I love it so much from Rachel holding Allison collapsed in her arms :sob::sob::sob: to Rachel literally being to dinner with Ian and being like ‘byee Allison needs me’ halfway through, that always makes me giggle. Such a rich episode to think about and unpick!

some Allison headcanons I know in my heart to be true because I’m bored and thinking about her <3

  • one word. Beatlemania. That girl is a thirtysomething Beatles fan
  • Forcibly unlearned her west country accent to go to Cambridge
  • in original CM, lives in some shit little student flat with a stack of washing up in the sink and laundry on the floor because she never grew out of 17 year old habits
  • in new CM she stays with Rachel in Who Killed Toby Kinsella? but then she just never left. So now she occupies the spare room full time

wait I’ve got another one! How could I forget: she can NOT cook. ‘I got everything in for spaghetti’ in Artificial Intelligence, yeah no wonder Julian didn’t want to come home and she didn’t cook for Rachel :skull: my girl is a cup noodles and beans on toast kind of girl

did I mention that I love her recently :sob:

So I’ve decided my next listen is going to be getting back into Counter-Measures with New Countermeasure Series 1 (the one after the Who Killed Toby special). Just thought I’d make @sircarolyn’s day.

YAYYYY join me in my madness!!! Troubled Waters is one of my ALL TIME favourite CM episodes, but Nothing To See Here is soooo much fun as well and A Gamble With Time introduces Lady Clare who I just LOVE

I will be excited to see what you think!

It’s been AAAGGES since I listened to ‘classic’ CM - and the special - is there anything key I need to have reminded myself of? (I was going to relisten but realised I have too much backlog and I can save that for a future Audio Club Extra).

Not really - they have a new office and they’re all technically dead and according to the covers they’ve all aged almost 25 years between 1965 and 1973 but other than that, it’s pretty much a soft reboot
