I just finished Children of Earth and, man, what an incredible story! I find it hard to find a series that is so tragic for me. For the first time, I felt like there were so many consequences for each act. I stopped watching Torchwood after the second season because of Owen and Tosh’s death, because she was my favorite of the team… but I gave it a chance and continued yesterday, and they ended up destroying my psycology with Ianto’s death… But before that happened, his relationship with Jack is really cute. I feel like all the characters were very well developed here! I think I’m going to put this season in my ranking of the best stories in the franchise. I’m shocked, but at the same time enchanted. I don’t know what to think about the villains, I love the construction of the mystery in relation to the two periods of the story, but the 456 are just disgusting to me and nothing more. On the other hand, the human antagonists are very interesting and in a way I felt like I was watching Stranger Things for some reason, I must have found it similar
all this government plot and children involved! And you, what did you think of this season/arc/story?
It’s one of my favourite pieces of TV drama, like, ever. It was such an incredible week, watching each episode as it came out, and it was so well written. Powerful and dark stuff.
One of the only things in The Whoniverse I’ve cried at, but probably not at what you’d expect
The realisation that Myfanwy is probably dead?
Even though I didn’t emphasize it in the post, I was devastated by all the things involving the children and especially Jack’s grandson at the end, that was brutal… But I don’t know if that’s what you’re talking about
Easily my favourite series of TV Torchwood! Really strong series.
Genuinely one of the best series ever, not just in Doctor Who!
Frobisher, that is all
In Day 1, Ianto tells Rhiannon that he’s busy on Saturday. On Day 2, he reads the newspaper, that says Day 2 is Wednesday. Meaning Ianto was busy by being dead on the Saturday (Day 5), and I find that pretty funny.
This also does lose me a bit because this means Day 5 falls on a weekend, in canon, meaning parents were very stupid and very gullible, nation-wide, to send their kids to school on a weekend for “safety”. I feel like many groups would rebel against this, and see it for what it is.
Ianto also says to Rhiannon how he doesn’t want his relationship or sexuality broadcast, and his love confession in death is broadcasted on television anyway, to the cabinet members.
“Rhiannon”, as in her name is inspired by a Welsh myth/folklore of a motherly deity figure who lost her children to kidnapping (I believe?), while “Ianto” as a name is a variant of “God”, (and a variant of “Jack”/“John”). To further on this, I can go into great detail about Ianto’s depiction in relation to angels, purity, forgiveness, and Christianity in expanded media. This is very subtle but is also quite ethereal, and haunting; his actor also mentioned in interviews Ianto’s possible religious leanings. I can also go into how Jack’s representation is the polar opposite, I should really make a thread to deconstruct my thoughts
I do consider season 3 to be its own thing; season 1 will always be my fav due to the grunge vibes lol. I recently watched the first season of The 3 Body Problem and got major Children of Earth vibes- which I LOVED. I’d recommend 3 Body Problem to anyone who wants the same kind of vibes- tight cast, heavy political undertones, and a looming alien threat. I just kinda wish Children of Earth had a cult dedicated to the 456, I felt it would’ve been a cherry on the top.
I remember sobbing when I first watched it, it’s a devastating story. But I also cry like a little baby at the season 2 finale (even on rewatch), so maybe I’m just too soft.
