Hey I’m Eden!
I don’t usually participate in online forums because I’m not used to it so I thought I’d try something new. I don’t usually do intros but here’s just all to know about my experience with the show:
My best friend calls me the Doctor Who Dictionary, a title I wear proudly. It’s ironic too because I’ve not even seen the whole show but I know infinitely more about the show than anyone else I know in person so it’ll be awesome to discuss the greatest show in the galaxy with more people who’ve watched more than just NuWho.
My two favourite Doctors are Bill Hartnell and Jon Pertwee, my top 5 companions are Rose, Jo, Jamie, Vicki, and Ace, not somewhat in that order. My favourite season is series 2 (2006) and my favourite episode is Blink because I’m a normie
I got into the show in 2018 when I saw it on Netflix - don’t worry I didn’t start the show with Chibnall’s writing (I like some of his stuff but Jay Exci’s the Fall of Doctor Who video really gave me a better understanding of why I didn’t enjoy the era and so I don’t think highly of a lot of it). I was 13 at the time I started the show and watched it with my younger sister and my Dad who’d grown up watching 3, 4, and 5 in the 80s on reruns. I got all the way up to Blink, an episode I’d been anticipating for most of my life (basically the only thing I knew about the show prior to watching was David Tennant was “Doctor Who”, so was “Tristan from All Creatures” (aka Peter Davison), and I’d seen one scene from Blink). I watched the episode, loved it, and quit the show afterwards because it was so scary that I couldn’t sleep for 2 months.
2.5 years later when I was meant to be studying for my year 10 exams (end of 2020) I saw series 1 on ABC iView was leaving soon so I started rewatching from Aliens of London (one of my favourites - don’t judge) and the rest is history.
I haven’t finished Classic Who for a variety of reasons, mostly because I tried to watch everything in less than a year in the lead up to the 60th (for a youtube channel I had that currently doesn’t exist but I’m considering bringing back for fun) and burnt out and I’m still trying to repair my relationship to the show. I’m careful with what I watch and what I don’t to avoid a second burn out. My best friend is currently in season 3 with Bill Hartnell which contains a lot of the telesnaps I haven’t watched and my attention span is shit so it’s been challenging to keep up with what she’s watching.
Most recent episodes I watched were Attack of the Cybermen (I couldn’t stand it, Colin’s Doctor is so rude to Peri in it that I just started zoning it out) and then Dragonfire because I wanted to actually watch the full thing before starting season 26, a task I did not complete, but at least I actually understand how Ace left Perivale in the first place.
After that massive info dump I guess long story short, I’m a massive fan of the show and I have no idea what usually goes in introductions but I attempted something. So hi.
Wow that’s a hot take. I’d love to hear more, it’s one of the less favoured seasons here.
I also watched this and agreed with almost all of it. We try to stay positive here and I don’t like to be negative on any era, particularly when there are Chibnall/Thirteen/Flux fans here, but that video perfectly sums up my feelings I think.
Anyway, enjoy the site, looking forward to hearing more of your opinions!
This was actually my first live season of the show and I have a massive soft spot for it. War of the Sontarans, Village of the Angels, and if you count it as part of series 13 - Eve of the Daleks are some of my favourites. I really like Jodie and I’m really really excited to listen to her big finish stuff this year! The Witchfinders is my favourite of hers and Haunting of Villa Diodati. Did not mean to sound like a hater if that’s how I came across whoops!
Well there’s a lot of things. In my head series 4 is objectively the best because I think every episode is good (whether that’s controversial I’m not sure but I enjoy every story). But when is comes to series 2 I just love it. Ten and Rose is probably my favourite TARDIS duo so that helps it. I also love the first 7 episodes. Christmas Invasion to Age of Steel is one of my favourite episode runs, I know New Earth isn’t popular but I think it’s so much fun. Like those 7 episodes I’m really attached to, with Age of Steel being my favourite seeing as I’m a massive Pete Tyler fan. I think there’s 3 middling episodes in the season, the obvious ones: Idiot’s Lantern and Love & Monsters I enjoy to an extent, and I don’t like Fear Her much at all. But out of the 14 episodes of the series I love 11 of them soooooo it just works for me. I don’t think it’s for everyone but it’s absolutely for me. Other favourite seasons of mine from across the board are season 2, season 5, season 10, season 14, season 25, series 4, and series 5. Like there’s a lot of other seasons I love but these are my absolute favourites.
That was the first season I got to watch live with all the other fans. Biiiiig soft spot for it don’t worry you won’t hear much flux slander from me. It’s just Arachnids in the UK I can’t stand
That’s a lovely origin story and a few things we disagree on! I’m not a fan of Rose or Series 2. But I also am not the biggest fan of Flux, even though it has some interesting ideas going for it.
I also love Jamie and Ace!
Oh, and Colin’s era and his Doctor are unfairly maligned. I think his TV presence isn’t as bad as is often depicted, but he’s even better on audio!
I’ve seen a fair bit of Trial and I really liked his dialogue in that. I thought he was really funny (tho take that with a grain of salt this is coming from someone who thinks Adric is funny, I love Adric) so I actually wasn’t ready for how bad parts of his era could get. I’ve seen Mysterious Planet and Terror of the Vervoids semi-recently and I liked Colin in those. No hate for Colin I love him but his attitude towards Peri at the start of s22 was a slap in the face I wasn’t prepared for
Welcome! We’re all massive fans here so I’m sure you’ll fit in perfectly! One way a forum differs from typical modern social media is that it’s good to go back and post on old topics, even if they haven’t been posted on in months, so please don’t be shy to read around and add any thoughts you have anywhere
Feel free to check out the TV Club. We’ve just finished going through Series 2 there, so there’s a thread on each story. That’s a great place to see our thoughts and add defenses of your own.
