But then how did he kill the first Sontaran? And what exactly was the Rutan’s plan here if he doesn’t like close combat? I dunno it just seemed a bit weird to me!
Churl turned to face his enemy. ‘Stavv would never have been bested by a blind human girl,’ he sneered. ‘You hid in the shadows outside the ship and attacked him from behind, then dragged his corpse away to take its form.’
It’s less about close-quarters attacks, more about close-quarters fights. The Rutans seem to prefer sneaking and stealth based approaches to combat, compared to the Sontaran’s direct fights.
They don’t have the stomach for close quarters combat in the way an assassin doesn’t have the stomach for it, not in the way a regular person doesn’t
I’ve finished the book now! A nice set of short stories, I’m glad I read it!
Bought the book back when you announced it had a badge…
Only just started reading it.
I gave The Stranger the exact same score as you!
I actually found the concept of children working in factories making things for the war disturbing enough but made even worse by the fact it was described as being the safest place for them because of the war - until suddenly it wasn’t. I’m not a huge Time War fan but found this a really strong start to the collection - and totally different tonally from the next story - one of the original Files stories.
The Hero Factor felt like a Doctor Who Adventures strip in prose form. Not a huge fan and I’m not sure the ending made a huge amount of sense (the bad guy literally just runs away!)
This reminds me that i need to continue this
Oh well good news for you stragglers, I’ve just last night fixed the order of this Set, so the “my next story” and the previous/next arrows will do them in the book order
Then it was a good thing that I waited
I noticed that exchange and was pleased. That said, I’ve already read a few of these in the Files books, so my readthrough is hitting my ‘next reread’ section as well.
Mission to Galacton was fun - a short story basically set during the 60s Dalek comic strips where a Dalek saucer would arrive on a planet, encounter some big monstery life forms, get trounced and then either exterminate the hell out of them or run away (here they do both).
I wonder why, though, that the Bronze Daleks are listed as having their ‘first appearance’ for this story.
Just a mistake when entering stories.
The character of “Bronze Daleks” is a bit pointless really, I think I might remove all those Dalek variations - they are just clutter. Does anyone think I should keep them? (Keeping them involves lots more work to double-check they are all correct).
I think maybe keep the specific characters like Caan and the time controller - ones like that. Otherwise, yeah, it gets a bit cluttered and there are so many different yet similar titles - saucer commander etc.
I’ve been meaning to ask, what is this collection actually like?
A bit of a mixed bag.
Some really good stories (A Dog’s Life is one of the best K9 stories I’ve ever experienced), mixed in with a bunch of rather childish mid stories.
If you want to see the ratings, go to the Set Page and click “View Set Stats”.
If you complete and rate every story you’ll belong to a very exclusive club of just a handful of badge earners
‘A bit’ is doing some real heavy lifting there
But they’re quite short, right?
Is £2 a good price for the collection?
They are yeah
for £2 it’s absolutely worth it though, honestly, for the K9 story alone
Ok might get this then.
I’m a quick reader, I like short stories, plus there’s a badge on offer!
Hmm, I might give this a go as well. Always nice to read some short stories between the other stuff.
I’ve ordered a copy!
My copy has arrived
I’m excited to get reading!
