Get into Faction Paradox with us! Book club starting on Wednesday July 9th đź’€

If you don’t know what Faction Paradox is: It’s a long-running multi-media Doctor Who spinoff about goth time lords who do freaky things. It’s the black sheep; the occult sci-fi progeny of Doctor Who! More details in @glass_shard’s guide.

Faction Paradox has a reputation of being difficult to get into, but it’s greatly exaggerated… and now that we’re doing it together, it’s doubly easy! No prerequisite reading. Join us!

After a heart-warming showing (15 people!) in the thread gauging interest, it’s become clear that we simply must hold a Faction Paradox book club, lest there be no justice in the world. And so, we shall!

  • What?
The book to get is Weapons Grade Snake Oil by Blair Bidmead.[1] (TARDIS Guide page)

The story goes a wealth of places, but the bare bones are as such: A minor character from The Sarah Jane Adventures gets mentally bonded to her new friend, a colossal green elephant mech.[2] She subsequently becomes the president of Pluto. Now she has to pull off a heist. Don’t ask.

    We’re expecting a fairly high-pace, breezy read!

If you get it in paper form, make sure it arrives by…

  • When?
The book club will run from Wednesday July 9th through Friday August 8th. This is the period when we, nominally, expect to read and actively discuss the book in the thread – but the thread will remain on the forum, and thus will the ability to discuss the book. The same format as the other book clubs on the forum!

  • How?
Er, read a book and talk about it.

For now, consider it a one-off – if it all goes well and we all have a good time, we’ll pow-wow about doing a second edition!

Naturally, feel free to talk about the book club, ask questions,[3] come with ideas and opinions for future instances, and just generally express your excitement (I hope you’re excited! I’m excited, if you can’t tell!!!) in this thread!

Is this a good book to start with if you know nothing about FP?

Yes! No Lore Needed.™️

(Lore in Faction Paradox is very much a value-added proposition â€“ it’s fun to make connections, but it’s never required.)

I’m afraid I’m already working through “This Town Will Never Let Us Go” right now, and intend to go through the releases in order, so I shall have to decline in participating on this particular book club. I would like, however, to sincerely offer my support to the club, and am pleased Faction Paradox is getting more readers. It is quite a lovely time.

Hold the phone â€“ are you the “Plum Pudding” I’m thinking of? From Arcbeatle Press’s A Christmas Codex?

I own The Book of the War, I’m ready for this

Slay! Thank you @Molly , this will be fun. Need to check my books to see if I own this one or need to order it, there’s a couple things I want to order from Obverse so would be an opportunity to do an order if so.

How did you get your hands on that?

I will – in fact, I am slaying as we speak

Same! There’s so much I want to read of theirs – beyond the tons of Faction Paradox (even an album based on it), there’s Iris Wildthyme, Brenda and Effie, their upcoming Eighth Doctor charity anthology (I respect any kick in the face of copyright law)… My pockets aren’t deep enough.

I’ll get my hands on a copy of The Book of the War some day… when someone decides to sell it to me for a tenner :sob:
Really excited to discuss this book with people tho as I read it in January and loved it :))

Will sit this one out—best option for me (from Germany) seems to be buying directly from Obverse Books. I’m hesitant to open yet another account, especially since I can’t seem to find a FAQ page on their site about how they handle shipping to the EU. I mean, theoretically it should be no problem, but if they don’t do it correctly, that could mean a one-hour journey each way to the nearest customs office (one of the downsides of living in a rural area).

That said, I’m really intrigued. The book looks so good, and I’m definitely keen to buy a physical copy.
I’ll follow what others write and will probably buy it when I have a bit more time to check the shipping details.

I’ve never done a forum book club before, but I’m down to join this one. I’ve been meaning to get into FP for a while now.

I might like to try Faction Paradox one day, but I don’t think July will be a good month for me to start (want to enjoy my back catalogue of previous acquisitions). I wish you the best of luck though; maybe I’ll try it some other time.
