Genesis of the Cybermen in the lost stories

Adapted by David K Barnes! The writer of Daughter of the gods among other things.

Not exactly lost when it was published in David Bank’s Cyberman book (as noted in the article). I remember reading this years ago. Bit odd to give this to Davison though bearing in mind he’s already done Spare Parts.

Hmm, might get to this eventually but it doesn’t seem to be anything particularly groundbreaking that we haven’t seen before

Also, I seem to remember the Doctor being accompanied by a companion called Felicity in the synopsis in the Cyberman book.

It was the name chosen for a Doctor Who spoof my two friends and I put on at our Boys Brigade show once. I played Felicity…

mm yeah. Plus it’s pretty explicit that Earthshock is the first time these companions meet the cybermen…… still gonna order it tho, even tho it’s going to hit me repeatedly over the head with Earthshock foreshadowing

The article also states that Gerry Davis submitted the original idea to the DW production office in the early 80s, but it was turned down by JNT. That’s probably why they are adapting it with Davison, as they are trying to make this as close to the original intention as possible. There’s an alternate timeline out there, where this one was produced before or instead of Earthshock, probably.

I did not see this one coming. Does this make 5 Cyberman origins now? Spare Parts, World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls, Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel, The World Shapers, and Genesis of the Cybermen or am I missing something.

Chuffed about this! I’m not overly keen on Spare Parts, so I’m glad we’re getting another go at the broad idea incorporating more of Davis’ idea!

Loving that we get the full season 19 team for this. From the sounds of the news article it sounds as though they’re going to rationalise this as existing in the usual continuity rather than being its own thing, which I feel lost stories should be allowed to be. Could you imagine if they had the audacity to give this team an alternate timeline Cyberman story and still kill Adric off? Him being cyber-converted would break my heart!

Very excited for this, I’m glad we’re getting another bonus Fifth Doctor release next year and March can’t come soon enough! Though part of me wishes it was further out, as to soften the expected 11 month hiatus between Hooklight and the 2026 5DAs. Go on then, give us the other lost story or another novel adaption.

Well, I guess Cybermen are always originating…

I should finish Spare Parts and other Cybermen origin stories from classic era before this come out

DOCTOR: They always get started. They happen everywhere there’s people. Mondas, Telos, Earth, Planet 14, Marinus. Like sewage and smartphones and Donald Trump, some things are just inevitable.

Five times this has happened now.

People have really got to stop making cybermen, it never ends well.

This turning into a Jurassic Park situation.

The big twist of The Sky Man is that it’s a Cyberman origin, even if the name isn’t explicitly used.

I am curious about it! Probably not one I am as excited as the last two we got with Operation Werewolf and Deathworld, but definitely one that could be an interesting spin. Admittedly I would be a bit more interested in the original version of the five doctors getting adapted, when it comes to a new lost story for Davison, but I’ll take anything with my Cybermen (I say while also not liking most of the NuWho Stories with them).
