General Discussion for Ranking Game

In the Forest of the Night
Arachnids in the UK
The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos
Legend of the Sea Devils
Orphan 55

These are now the bottom 5.
All of them have issues, sure - but ultimately I find that there is more to enjoy in each of these stories at the end of the day than there is bad stuff.

@Tian I am with you that it is a lot more fun to talk about the positives in stories that the negatives :slightly_smiling_face:

Orphan 55.

I’ll leave you with that to think about.

No I meant what I said

You completely put into words how I feel - I do think David is a wonderful actor and Doctor, but the more Who I absorb, the more I realise some of the choices made about his incarnation aren’t my favourites. And I find it very frustrating that there’s a vocal faction of fans who act like he is the only Doctor who ever mattered and ever should matter

I know a lot of people that stopped watching after Smith, because 12 start was kind of meh. But the Nexflix removal was also a part of it.

My point was more about how people in today’s fandom look at 10 and 11. Feel like it has become ā€œcoolā€ to hate on them and distance themselves from the popularity Boom and I feel like the overrating of 12 is part of that.

Don’t get me wrong 12 is good but I would say that his hit rate is about the same as 10 and 11.

Just wondering, what actually are the good things about Orphan 55?

Trying to remember @shauny’s first comment after watching Wicked…something about Bailey…

I agree with this!

I think it is a visually beautiful story and Segun Akinola’s soundtrack is used really well throughout.
I always thought the whole ā€œBENNI!!ā€ thing was hilarious instead of annoying as I gather other people thought.
The whole atmosphere of that world is really well done.

But as I said, I think there are big flaws in each of the remaining five episodes, but there is always something to enjoy even if the story itself falls flat

I like the setting and although the make up job is odd, Hyph3n is played with good energy by the actress. Ryan gets some funny bits. The dregs are scary. I’ve always liked the disparate characters face danger as a group trope ala a disaster movie. I like the twist of where they are.

And do you know what. I don’t care the message is in your face. Have you seen the state our planet is in and where it’s going? More people need to just blankly state the problem and if they want to do that on Doctor Who so the kids hear it and as a result tell the adults to pull their finger out and save something for them to live on then that’s fine by me.

People often don’t like being preached at when it makes them actually face up to something they’re happy to pretend is someone else’s problem.

(Rant over…but seriously I just don’t people’s problem with one little speech).

I don’t have anything verbose to add but I’ll echk the above, I never got people’s issue with Orphan 55. It’s not the greatest ever but it’s not that that dreadful

I liked this rant :+1:

The speech is something I actually don’t have a problem with, it being some people’s only reason for hating the episode I find ridiculous.

Now this is definitely true.

Love his music!

I would agree with all of this, but it’s all executed so badly, and the best elements are underutilised.

My massive problem with this episode?

It could have been so, so good.

Hot take I guess considering how many disliked it but… Space Babies is Sleep No More done right

I don’t like either but it’s certainly Sleep No More done better :eye::eye:

I really liked Space Babie! To be honest I don’t remember Sleep No More enough to know if the rest of your take is good.

That’s because the Eleventh Doctor is cool!

Both are episodes about the crew of a space thingy (station/ship) in a base under siege being attacked by a monster linked to something basic to our human existence.

In Sleep No More it’s the ā€œsand in your eyesā€, in Space Babies it’s catarrh. Both episodes have well-meaning but kinda shallow critiques on capitalism. It doesn’t help Sleep No More that only a season prior we had Listen and one later we had Oxygen.

The main difference is that one is trying to be an actual horror piece, and failling; and the other is fun camp.
