General Discussion for Ranking Game

OK it ends in two hours but I have a vote available now. I could save it…

I was just thinking this will become like eBay when everyone waits until the last second to try and make a change.

I expect chaos!!!

I’ll be on the beach or something in two hours so I’ll let you fight amongst yourselves

I’d say The Daleks is a little low, and I wouldn’t put Reign last, but overall an acceptable ranking. It’s just a strong season all around.

It’s pretty impressive how the first ever season of Doctor Who is pretty consistent in terms of quality, there are some standout serials but they’re all at least good

I don’t like Sensorites much once they get down to the planet, but that’s the worst I can say

I’m glad that I was able to get Keys of Marinus to 4th, I do think Edge of Destruction and Marco Polo are a bit high up and Reign of Terror is way too far down, but I think this is overall a really good ranking

The final ranking:

  1. The Aztecs
  2. The Edge of Destruction
  3. Marco Polo
  4. The Keys of Marinus
  5. An Unearthly Child
  6. The Daleks
  7. The Sensorites
  8. The Reign of Terror

Pretty cool results overall. Like most people, there are definitely things I would change, as I would have had The Reign of Terror and The Daleks higher, but it was fun to see how forum folks view things.

Referring back to the original ranking (which is based on how they are currently scored on the TARDIS Guide) is interesting.

  1. The Aztecs
  2. The Daleks
  3. The Edge of Destruction
  4. Marco Polo
  5. An Unearthly Child
  6. The Keys of Marinus
  7. The Reign of Terror
  8. The Sensorites

Clearly The Aztecs has a lot of love and is a bit of a darling among both sides of the community. The Daleks had a big drop but I think that has a lot to do with the enthusiasm for The Edge of Destruction, Marco Polo, and The Keys of Marinus. An Unearthly Child remains right in the middle, while The Reign of Terror and The Sensorites swapped places.

Overall while I think this shows what others are saying in this thread - Season One is pretty well balanced overall and though some stories have strengths over others, there’s a lot of love for everything going around here. Pretty cool!

Big thanks to everyone who participated! I think the firm end time worked well as opposed to my initial idea of waiting a certain number of rounds. Of course, if anyone has ideas of further modifying the game feel free to share it (or just put it into practice with a new game!).

Otherwise I really appreciate how quickly people like @shauny and @MrColdStream took to The Ranking Game. I was really touched it got its own category right away. :heart_hands:

My feedback would be that I think the end point should be more well defined from the beginning as opposed to we play for so long and just eventually hear “you have this much time left.” I think there should be a set and consistent formula to know how long a game will last, and I’m not sure leaving the time limit unknown for most of the game works as well as the elimination game’s clear limit of it ends when nothing else is left. This also would help make it more accessible for people to make their own ranking games if they knew how long a game would last if they put 10, or 15, or 20, or however many different things in it. Elimination games were a bit more simple for anyone to make in that regard with the clear limit as seen by just how the game works.

I guess the concern some may have is how then do we prevent sniping at the last minute, and I’m not sure how to mitigate that. Maybe some kind of rule that if you haven’t participated in the game at least some amount of times before, you can’t submit one within a certain amount of time of the end. In other words, you have to have been playing the game already at least a bit to make changes in the last x amount of time, just to prevent last minute snipers. The 20 hours between submissions is good and can stay as is.

I definitely agree a firm end point should be established at the start from now on. That was my big takeaway from the game, for sure. The only reason I didn’t do that is because we sort of arrived at the idea of a time limit later into the game for this first one.

I was worried about sniping too but then I saw @shauny express some enthusiasm for it, viewing it like an Ebay bidding war or something. I can’t say I hate that angle of it. It seems kind of fun if there’s some competition around the end.

I do think your idea of there being some sort of expectation in place for the ending is reasonable though. Maybe one can’t post in the last 20 hours if they haven’t already at least once before? Just something nice and simple that’s easy to follow.

I’m just spitballing ideas but maybe there could be a rule that says you can’t vote for the same story more than twice in a row. So if someone had bumped up, say, The Daleks in their last two posts, they’d have to pick something else for their third post, before going back to The Daleks for their fourth if they wanted. This could add an element of strategy too, and would stop people just constantly voting for the same thing over and over?

I like that idea! I feel like that adds a layer of strategy and might give motivation for people to post regardless of the time limit.

That’s an idea. I know I upped Marco Polo on all three of my turns.

The issue there is enforcing that rule. Sounds like a lot more work for the moderators to me…

Also something to consider, it should be reasonably low effort for the mods to manage.

I will say, when we turn on slow mode, we can choose a date and time for it to be until, so as long as we know how long the game is going to last, we can just set it then.

I was worried about enforcement, too, but was also thinking we’re all cool here and can keep to an honour system. I don’t really see it as a huge deal if inevitably, mistakes happen. There’s no need for mods or anyone to painstakingly check each and every post for accuracy.

This isn’t about people intentionally voting twice for the same thing. This is about people repeatedly accidentally doing it, then needing mods to fix their posts.

I guarantee everyone would be forgetting on that one.

Oh, yeah, I could definitely see that happen.

Agreed. And I’m sure people would flag up any instances of a rule break here. It’d require no more moderation than any other game where an error is made.

I mean people couldn’t even add and subtract properly in the OG game…

New game up! I couldn’t actually find any sort of list like this online so I just sort of went through the existing stories and picked out ones with distinct moments around or inspired by water. I might have missed some, but deliberately excluded serials with space pirates. They didn’t feel like they counted to me, since the theme is more around water and that felt a couple steps distant from such content.
