toture them… do it…
Also I listened to the interviews earlier and they were delightful. And also making me want to check out the war doctor range
Just re-listened to “Soldier Obscura” which is just so, so good
So of course I am now re-listening to “In Search of Lost Time” from “Echoes Through Eternity”
and Havoc now. greatly enjoyed that. Narvin is so good in this one. Seán Carlsen is amazing. truly love the relationship Narvin and Romana have here. all this politicking is absolutely excellent stuff.
live blog
- oh we are doing narration this is going to hit hard
- he does that very well
- very very well
- well at least Romana gets her job back
- ■■■■ Rassilon though
- oh Narvin is so happy
- see Romana is thinking strategically
- okay what is going on here
- oh Eris! I don’t know them but I know their name
- oh they have primary hearts? that’s interesting lore
- the door sounds are so good
- oh they have learned from the wynter situtation
- Livia is a very interesting character
- this is all going too well
- the way Narvin is actually a very good mentor
- this is like the third time this happened
- you doing good Narvin
- oh Eris is calling him old lmao
- those laws aren’t ancient to Rassilon though
- also I want to study Livia
- oh she is so soft at that
- and I am so tired
- that is very fair
- oh this is very sweet
- the way they always call Rassilon Lord President Eternal is interesting
- be careful Narvin
- love the way Romana and Livia are scheming together now
- Romana does not know that she constantly does things without planning
- yeah I was wondering where the prime minister thing came from
- this is so funny that Narvin really does not care about protocol anymore
- he truly has had such an evolution
- what is he doing
- that is so mean leave her alone
- Narvin is a little reckless
- well that’s bad
- I wonder who it is
- if it is Eris I will kill someone
- that is messed up
- what
- Romana why
- oh I do love when she has issues with control and power
- she is being a bit unethical
- the way their roles are switched
- oh Narvin
- he’s so terrified
- but then how can his future version even exist
- that’s just going to cause a paradox
- okay no paradoxes I don’t understand time travel anyway
- oh no
- poor guy
- this terrible
- oh the way he speaks of Romana
- oh
- oh I love that
- that is really cool
40 mins into gallifrey 5.2 and this one is very boring and uninteresting, probably a 5 or 6 for me.
yeah that one was definitely a low point of the series for me too
what i got from it is that this guy is experimenting on some slaves and wants to figure out time travel.
Gallifrey 5.2 - Evolution - 5/10 - A bit boring, plot’s simple tho and Anjli Mohindra’s character is kind of cool other than that very forgettable.
Is it a good episode? No. Is it a makes sense episode? Also no. But I have a real soft spot for s5. I don’t think it remotely achieves the aims it wants to and I think it gets confused answering the questions it posits, but it gives Leela a plot, and I can’t help but love that
Relistened to “The Devil You Know” this morning.
Time War 1 has some solid stories
This one is definitely the best War Master story that exists by quite a bit for me.
I’ll write more words later when I’ve woken up a bit more but like. DYK is such a conflicting episode to me. Leela and the Master are obvious brilliant together. But something about it… irritate is the wrong word. I think it wants to make a point about Leela and it misses it. As I say, I’ll elucidate later - I have many thoughts…
I’m intrigued
(Don’t ruin it for me )
I won’t, I won’t - I also really like this episode, I just have a bit of a frustration with what it’s trying to say about Leela - that she is not the person she used to be and that she is more Time Lord than ever.
Ramblings
Because the thing is, the episode is right - she is more ‘use words and tricks’ than ‘use knife’ like she used to be. I think my issue is not that the episode is saying that, but more that it isn’t going far enough with the point. And I think partly that’s a function of the TW series as a whole - I think Leela is woefully underused and the way I would fix the entire thing would be not to conveiniently lose Leela into the void because we don’t know what to do with her but rather conscript her to the War Council and have her torn between duty and Romana and really lean into that identity crisis of the fact that she isn’t the Sevateem she used to be but she also will never truly fit in with the Time Lords and they will never accept her.
But I digress. The thing is, DYK has to put Leela at a disadvantage to the Master because of the nature of the episode. But it wants her to be strong and cool because she is. But it also wants to try and prove that she’s neither the warrior she desperately is clinging onto being nor the Time Lord agent she’s being forced into becoming. And it only has an hour. So it just spends a lot of time waffling on saying ‘huh, isn’t Leela’s identity really interesting?’ without really doing anything and then boots her at the end.
I go back and forth on how much I like this ep. I have the same flavour of issue with Mother Tongue - I like the point it’s trying to make, I just disagree with the way it is making that point. I think it’s why I am enjoying War Room so much, because that’s really digging into Leela’s character as she is now and not shying away from the fact that the self she presents isn’t really the person she used to be at all, no matter how much she pretends
Gonna listen to Imperiartrix after work hopefully, though seeing how long it is I’m not sure if I’ll find the time
You make some really good points here I must say. If that’s you rambling I would love to see what you write when you put your mind towards a coherent argument
Yes, Leela is done so much better in regards to her being an alien living among Gallifreyans in the War Room range.
This was only coherent because I’ve had three cups of tea and had these thoughts many times before But I am pleased I didn’t spoil the episode too much for you!
Tbh many of my issues with DYK are the same I have with all Gallifrey re: Leela after about series 2 - they don’t know quite where to push her character next so they waffle on and sideline her and make her characterisation go round in circles Panacea my beloathed, for example
love your thoughts and agree very much. the way Leela becomes more and more like the Time Lords is so interesting but at the same time they rarely ever do anything with it and keep her back and it’s a little annoying
Gallifrey 5.3 - Arbitration - 8.5/10 - Best story of this set,all the characters are great in this one and Lord Zaka is an interesting villain, finally we have Daleks and I assume they will return to Gallifrey and this will all lead to a Time War,but yeah really loved this one,and I think Gallifrey 5 is kind of underrated, apart from the 2nd story this is a really good season, can’t wait to do Gallifrey 6 today.
I’ve listened to “Desperate Measures” from Time War 1 and “Havoc” from Time War 2.
Oh this is just the stuff I (also) love the Gallifrey: Time War era
Best Rassilon ever!
Sexiest too! I’m not sure if every Rassilon has a name (usually their actor?) but I’ve seen him called Sexy Rassilon and never by his name
