I did when I first realised I was gay but, years on, having come out, being open, and now being comfortable with my sexuality, it rarely bothers me.
But I think lots of people (of all genders and sexualities etc) experience what you describe for many different reasons. Society has the potential to be very constricting, but I think it’s improving.

Some people just have “warm faces”, like you can tell they are friendly the first time you see them. Your wife is one of these people.
And if you don’t mind me saying, you look much more handsome than in your Matt Smith picture.

I think some of it doesn’t help when big companies like LEGO reinforce the stereotypes. I hate the Minidolls they do because they’re clearly trying to advertise them towards the female demographic. The promotional pictures have young girls in them, and never feature any boys. It’s like the minidolls sets are for concepts that they think men and boys won’t be interested in. I’d rather they just went for the standard minifigures with all sets.
The most bizarre is the choice to make the Wednesday sets a Minidolls range, when it would work far better with standard minifigures.
