I get that the book does talk to actors (personally I’m really interested in what Katy Manning and Matthew Waterhouse have to say), but John Barrowman is probably the least important aspsct of Captain Jack. I’m far more interested in what Russel T Davies will say about the character than what Barrowman thinks.
Also Barrowman has such ego, the person “who opened the doors” for LGBTQ+ representation wasn’t him, but RTD.

Wasn’t the only complaint about Barrowman’s behaviour from Noel Clarke, when it was revealed that he was a sex pest? “Sure I sexually harassed women and bullied them, but Barrowman would sometimes take his dick out on set as a joke.”
If there was someone else who spoke out, I’d be happy to change my mind, but as far as I can see Barrowman was just being silly with friends (granted it gets mucky since those “friends” were technically work colleagues, but if Eccleston, Piper, Coudri, or anyone else on the cast/crew complained about it, then fair enough)
(I don’t know enough about the rumours to have a definitive stance, btw. Just going off what I do know. Was Barrowman’s behaviour something I would do/tolerate? Nope. Do I think he should forever live in a hole as a consequence, and never work again? Nope.
I love Captain Jack and do find it odd to erase him from the history books like this.
And I certainly don’t get why RTD gets none of the blame, when he’s certainly known for taking it too far. Some of his comments about Russell Tovey are really gross. Imagine Steven Moffat talking like that about Karen Gillan.

It was widely known that he did that on set and whether or not people specifically complained about it, it’s not a professional thing to do.
I think if he’d have taken it seriously and apologised then he wouldn’t have been cut off but he’s never taken it well.

He displayed similar behaviour on other shows he worked on, such as Arrow. And the problem was that it was known but not properly dealt with. And when confronted about it, rather than apologising, Barrowman played the victim, doubled down and made it all worse. It seems that he doesn’t even acknowledge that what he did isn’t acceptable workplace behaviour.

Yup, they had loads of behind-the-scenes problems early on, and we only know some of it. I don’t think we’ll ever know the full extent of it.
I think we can safely say that had these same things happened today, Doctor Who would have been cancelled long ago.

This makes it difficult to defend him. I’m usually all for people making mistakes, then growing, apologising and changing (I’m many years sober, so believe me, I’ve been through stuff myself, and would be f*cked if forgiveness wasn’t an option) — but if he’s incapable of even recognising he did wrong then there’s not much I can do with it.

Separating art from the artist can be varying in difficulty but in this situation, I do think it’s fine to like the characters of Jack and Mickey, I mean I like both those characters. I definitely like them less because of what the people behind those characters are like though…

Yeah. Julie Gardner admitted she received complaints and had to “reprimand” him. Barrowman then continued to do it according to Eve Myles, who claims he flashed their cabbie whilst filming Miracle Day and several “Arrow” co-stars who also claim he exposed himself on set.

Yes, even though the actors themselves are problematic and are usually seen as the public faces for their characters, Jack and Mickey themselves were created by RTD and aren’t problematic.

Pete McTighe, at the BFI today: the story started in Destination: Daleks will be continued in a special Fifth Doctor comic strip in a DWM supplement coming with the issue in April.
Also, Al Dewar has stated that there will be 11 new figures coming in the rest of 2026.
