I use Paint.NET – free editing software. It’s just a matter of downloading the font (named in the below example), then I distort the text so it’s a little blurry, add some blur, make it slightly off-centre (adds a bit of authenticity), then I change the layered effect to get the slight glow/over-exposed colour, and taa-daaa! I never make them exact either, cos every caption back in the 1960s had its own quirks, or would be slightly different in size, etc. This also adds to the authenticity of it – just a lot of tweaking and playing with filters until it ‘looks right’.
The other secret is finding the right images, to go with whatever caption/joke you have. Hartnell has so many good close-ups, but you also gotta find one where the text will be legible too.

I first shared them on Twitter in 2022 or 2023 – some of them were retweeted a lot, and people just started sharing them on Tumblr, Pinterest, etc. I never thought to add a watermark, cos it’d ruin it, but it doesn’t bother me that people started using them – it makes me smile to see they still get posted now and again ![]()
