We got a new pope: Robert Francis Prevost, papal name Leo XIV. Second ever pope of the western hemisphere/the Americas, first ever American (USA) pope.
I’m not religious at all but I do find this stuff fascinating as someone who is somewhat of a history nerd. I am not familiar with Prevost but I hope he is more progressive and roots out the corruption and abuse in the Catholic Church.
I was hoping for Matteo Zuppi from Italy (he’s tolerant of LGBTQ stuff, based) or Jean-Claude Hollerich of Luxembourg (he went so far to say that the teaching that homosexual relationships are sinful is wrong, based). Konrad Krajewski of Poland would have been cool too (he’s not papabile though, as in a major candidate), he went and turned on the electricity in a building where hundreds of homeless people were living without power and water, he wired money to trans sex workers who lost their jobs when COVID hit, and he went as a special humanitarian envoy to Ukraine during the war, BASED.
He seems to be a moderate upon further reading. Seems to be quite a supporter of refugees and the poor like Francis so that’s good.
But his statements on LGBTQ topics are… less comforting. Shouldn’t be too surprised… it is the Catholic Church, after all. But I’ll try to remain positive.
A friend that I converted into a Doctor Who fan started series one on April 5 and is now on series 6. I’m very impressed. He already correctly guessed that the young girl in the spacesuit is Amy and Rory’s daughter. I asked him if he wanted me to tell him if he’s correct or not and he said no, so I’m very excited for when he later realizes that he’s right.
I just rewatched “The Snowmen,” and I wish that Victorian Clara ended up being the main companion. Nothing against modern Clara; I’m just sick of 99% of New Who companions being young human women living 21st century England, and there was a perfect opportunity for some variety.
Moffat said in a recent interview (well, a chat with RTD in the TARDIS) that he tried to use Victorian Clara but the dialogue was difficult to keep, and she just eventually became a modern day character, so he rewrote it.
So he wasn’t told what to do, just couldn’t make it work.
Moffat and RTD actually recently commented on the idea of historical companions, and Moffat himself said he tried to make Victorian Clara work but got two scripts in and didn’t feel it. I understand why historical companions are hard because you have to constantly keep in mind that they’re from the past and won’t know some basic stuff, especially when the rest of the show is set in the modern day or the future.
Video for context, I was even nice enough to timestamp it
(Damm, can’t believe Shauny beat me to the punch, that’ll teach me for citing my sources /j)
Thanks @Meara, that’s the video I was referencing, you did a much better job at actually finding the source than I did, I just tried to remember what they said
