I believe it was so they wouldn’t be spotted and Jodie as 13 being leaked
Interesting that as the show has gone on and its production values have increased real Police Call Boxes look like a prop in comparison.
My two favorites, always going back and forth, are the Altered Brachacki prop (The Smugglers through The Seeds of Doom, particularly during Seasons 10-11) and the Arwel Wyn Jones props (The Ghost Monument to present).
Something about the proportions and general state of the Brachacki is really appealing to me. Messy and increasingly asymmetrical, it’s hard to argue that she’s really been “designed” at all by this point, but in a way that really works. The tall, blank cylinder lamp, especially when it has the struts and dome on top is a particular favorite of mine, complimenting the box’s tall, slender silhouette. The light-on-dark Pull to Open sign seen from The Seeds of Death (the Troughton story, I always get it confused with Doom) onward is also very visually appealing. I’m very glad that it’s returned for the modern day. Speaking of..
The current set of props I think combo incredibly well with the current interior set - working in tandem as a sort of platonic ideal TARDIS. The proportions being a compromise between the Classic and RTD/Moffat props gives them a look that works next to any Doctor. I adore that Arwel went back and referenced actual MET boxes - the little touches that bring her more in line with a real Metropolitan Police Box are all so lovely, the taller lower-most door stile, the three roof stacks (which also evoke the 1980s props!), varying the texture to hint at how the original Police Boxes were made of concrete, but still keeping the TARDIS’ wood, etc etc. The texture and quality of the paint work along with the cast-metal Pull to Open sign also lends them an incredibly high-quality look, stylish and very pretty. I’m also a big fan of the unique blue lamp!
Agreed, I very much like 13s, glad they kept it for 14/15 honestly!
Big Shoutout to the one used in the Hartnell Era, I have a lot of fondness for that one as well!
I’m a big fan of the First Doctors. I like the deep colour, and the fact that it is so tiny compared to the later ones. I think the later ones are too big, and the OG one really does lend itself to jokes about everyone fitting inside etc.
