Planet of the Daleks is the only I don’t care for in this season (and even then it’s not terrible, just another example of Nation’s Greatest Hits). Three Doctors is good, but just misses being a favorite of mine.

Yeah. Planet is ok, it just feels like it’s been done.

It’s a pretty close tie between The Three Doctors and Frontier in Space for me. Both are solid examples of good fun.

I think the best Story here is easily The Green Death, such a beautiful Exit for Jo! (And people tell me classic doesn’t do emotional Exits ):<)
It’s a great Story, that has some great Pacing, and I love the Brig quite a lot here.
Carnival of Monsters is just fun, I really enjoy it and I think it’s a great way to bring back the Travelling Aspect.
And of course the Three Doctors has Bill Hartnell and Pat. Jon and Pat’s Bickering is legendary, no wonder it became the default way of how Incarnations interact.

As for the Stories I didn’t vote for: Frontier is great. And really only Planet is here the black sheep, it’s not even bad, just the most 3/5 Story ever (perfectly enjoyable, but not something I am eager to revisit).
Great Season, easily Jo and Three’s best Season for me

For Pertwee seasons, second only to 7.

I adore the green death, it’s easily my favourite third doctor story! Jo’s exit is done so well and the whole story just works wonderfully

Definitely The Green Death—one of Classic Who’s best. Even if I don’t rate Planet of the Daleks that highly, I don’t think there’s any truly awful stories in this series, but it’s still not my favourite overall.

I also have a soft spot for The Green Death. Jo’s exit is one of the few times I shed a tear when watching this silly show. And it’s a great mix of all things that make Pertwee’s era so much fun!

The Three Doctors is one I like as well, for the multi-Doctor aspect of it, and Carnival of Monsters is pretty fun as well.

I love the Green Death, an amazing story.
Poor Bert :smiling_face_with_tear:
Love the BOSS (Stevens…)
The Doctor c*ckblocking Cliff :eyes:
Plus it led to Mark Gatiss’ Mockumentary “Global Conspiracy”
The Doctor driving off in Bessie at the end :smiling_face_with_tear:
We had three seasons of Jo, why couldn’t we have you one more… The Third Doctor, Jo Grant, the Delgado Master (I know he isn’t in this story) and the UNIT family - it doesn’t get better than that for me

Carnival of Monsters is so great at poking fun at redundant bureaucracy.
The Miniscope is a great concept.
The costumes

Don’t sleep on season 10 :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks mainly to so many Third Doctor stories being released on Blu-ray, I’m relishing these episodes all over again. Sea Devils, Peladon, Autons, what a great time it was to be a fan of this series. Hinchcliffe and Holmes are rightfully lauded for their brilliant productions, but Letts and Dicks really delivered the good too - for five years!

All this rambling brings me to The Green Death, my favourite Series 10 tale. I have a question: did The Eighth Doctor model his appearance on young Cliff Jones? If so, Jo’s beautifully played departure must have hit harder than we thought! How moving to see the stoical, unflappable Third Doctor so affected by his assistant’s decision to leave him. Underplayed of course, the exact opposite of how things would be done post-2005, but hugely effective nonetheless.

And then there’s BOSS, the best psychotic computer ever; the lone tear on the face of the villain in that last shot; and the giant maggots, talked about in hushed tones on playgrounds throughout the land for weeks!

What a way to end the series.

Yup, Three definitely has his strengths, but accepting his companions’ romantic feelings isn’t one of them.

The Green Death stands tall over the rest of the season: grand scope as you always got with Pertwee finales, a perfect mix of action and humour, strong environmental messaging, so many iconic moments and one of the best companion departures to date.

I want to shine a light on Planet of the Daleks though, it gets a lot of criticism for basically being a “best of” compilation of The Daleks but what a compilation it is! The story really shines for me, it has a really cozy feel to it and you’ve got the benefit of two leads more than comfortable in their roles. It’s very Terry Nation but having had so much time away it feels really nice to get back into his style, he’s really good at these “resistance vs oppressors” stories.

I’d argue that, thematically speaking, Day of the Daleks is much better for that (“Then why do you need so many people to keep them under control? Don’t they like being happy and prosperous?” is such a standout moment). Though with Terry Nation it’s more about the fight itself than the politics behind it which is sometimes what you want. Very cosy watch, brings me right back to watching the Cushing movies over the Christmas holidays as a kid with a cup of tea and some toast, but this is so much better!

I think what modern viewers don’t see with Planet of the Daleks is that while yes, Nation repeats himself, he’s repeating ideas from 7-10 years prior. Most viewers then would have probably forgotten most of The Daleks and Master Plan. Or over that time there are likely plenty of newer viewers who hadn’t seen the earlier ones. When we watch now on our DVDs and streaming, we’re seeing them far closer together than viewers then would have, which would make us much more conscious of the repetition than at the time.

You make a very good point, I wonder if there was an element of nostalgia to it to the viewers old enough and passionate enough to remember too.

I decided to choose Carnival of Monsters and The Green Death. The political themes of Pertwee’s era culminate in The Green Death, with a surprisingly emotional finale to Jo’s time on the show that still leaves time to be a fun UNIT action story. Carnival of Monsters is a silly run around with a great production that really sells the different locations and creatures, and the framing scenes with the over the top bureaucratic aliens constantly scheming and looking slightly bewildered is a lot of fun to watch. Both 4/5 stories for me.

Oooo tough choice. The Green Death is of course an incredible serial, well regarded with great reason. I think the Three Doctors is one of the strongest multi-Doctor stories there is, I really like the Second and Third Doctors interacting. Finally Carnival of Monster I just found quite fun, but I disagree with that character suggesting that the Third Doctor of all people wouldn’t know Polari
