I was thinking about some of the incredible tracks composed for the show and I was wondering if anybody had any favourites, Murray Gold or not. Hell, it doesn’t have to be from Doctor Who, if your favourite’s a track out of Torchwood or The Sarah Jane Adventures, post it below.
Personally, All the Strange Creatures is the perfect Doctor Who track to me and I get ridiculously hyped whenever it’s played in the show.
The Shepherd’s Boy is obviously one of the most emotionally hard hitting pieces of music composed for the show and not just because of the phenomenal scene it plays over.
And a piece of music I don’t hear enough people talking about: …and somewhere else the tea’s getting cold is a wonderfully short and sweet track that is a beautiful send off to the classic era, I just wish it was longer.
My personal current favourite is Ruby Sunday’s theme mostly because it so peaceful and I’ve been listening to it on repeat while falling asleep in the last few weeks
Clara’s theme is forever a favourite as is Rose’s/the Doctor’s/Bad Wolf’s (never really got who it belonged to). But if we’re bringing in Torchwood, then I have to throw Owen’s theme in the ring. Absolutely gorgeous. I also really like the Ghostmaker’s theme, so simple yet so evocative.
Recently, I loved Murray Gold’s work on Dot And Bubble because it felt so different from his usual stuff, really working with a lot of synths in subtler ways that helped to underpin the claustrophobic dread of the episode.
Throwing it way back, I also love Westminster Bridge. It’s a really great homage to 70s Who I think (and no coincidence that its debut episode is a big homage to Spearhead From Space) that has a great driving spy movie feel.
Any time they deploy the Gallifreyan Choral Singers gets a big thumbs up from me, and it’s something that I think is sorely missed in our contemporary era.
Segun Akinola’s version of the main theme is, controversially, in my top three.
A few of my favorites have been mentioned, and I think if I had to pick a #1 favorite it is probably Clara’s theme, but the first song that always comes to my head when I think of good Doctor Who music is “She’s The Doctor”
I’ve mentioned before the score to The Happiness Patrol as one I like. Adric’s theme is always one that catches me, too, and I remember at least one piece of instrumental music in Keblam! I quite liked.
Also a fan of the Indian version of the end credits.
Life Among the Distant Stars has always been an absolute favourite of mine, and has featured on a few playlists for the last few years for me. I really love how it sort of sounds like hope and excitement and desire to see what is out there, but also a bit melancholy like a reminder of being trapped on Earth, alone in space.
