Aztecs will no doubt sweep this and rightly so, but honestly there are a lot of solid eps here, and I’m not huge on historicals so that’s a surprise to me that I like so many of these!
I’m not all that into pure historicals, but credit to the First, he had some fun ones. Also, Time Meddler is really nostalgic for me as one of my first Classic Who stories.
I’m really surprised Marco Polo is charting so low at the moment. I don’t particularly like it but generally I thought it was venerated. The Aztecs for the win though - it’s utterly sublime.
Hardest poll yet. Going to have to think very hard about this. Smugglers easily the weakest but still a solid 6/10, everything else already troubles the top of my First Doctor list anyway.
Fortunately, we are allowed four picks, because this one is hard! These are mine.
Marco Polo: such a marvellous story, even in its missing state. The reconstruction is stunning, the setting is interesting, and the villains are strong.
The Aztecs: one of the best Hartnell serials, full stop. Absolutely superb in every way possible. The characters are interesting, the setting is fascinating, the Doctor is on a roll, Barbara gets to shine, and there are many memorable lines and moments.
The Romans: a fun romp and the beginning of the Ian/Barbara romance that is totally real. Derek Francis is arguably one of the strongest guest actors from this era of the show, and his Nero is something else.
The Crusade: I have a soft spot for this one. It’s not quite as gripping as the other three, but the Julian Glover/Jean Marsh pairing is unbeatable, and it has Sir Ian as well.
Honourable mention to The Gunfighters, which is much better than perceived wisdom claims it to be.
The first three were relatively easy for me - ‘The Romans,’ ‘The Aztecs,’ and ‘The Time Meddler’ are my first group of three for the Hartnell historicals. Oh, but after that, finding a fourth was agonizing! I circled round and round with ‘Marco Polo,’ ‘The Crusade,’ ‘The Myth Makers,’ and ‘The Massacre of St. Bartholomew’s Eve,’ but I ultimately went with the latter.
