Favourite Almost Companions

it’s one of my favs of Nine’s stuff at Big Finish so far! it’s spooky, earnest, and weird in a way i like from Who

Adding to this, I wished Fred from ‘Planet of the End’ became a companion. They were awesome.

I also wonder if Callen and Doyle were just a sneaky test run. A way to let Eccleston get a small taste of how Big Finish could handle giving 9 new companions pre-Rose. I hope Christopher warms up to the idea soon, because it feels like they’ve already exhausted the solo 9th doctor premise.

missed this! yeah, Fred is wonderful and “Planet of the End” is one of my fav episodes of Who in general now!

maybe it was them trying to ease him into the idea. yeah, i really hope he softens on that, but i feel like the only person who could get that to happen is Billie Piper herself. i’ve been enjoying the run for the most part still! but i want them to get more ambitious. i am VERY excited for the new set being all River Song. that could’ve easily been a throwaway encounter.

I really really want audio stories with Nine and Rose. That would be amazing. Especially after starting to read the New Series Adventures, and imagining hearing those two together again!

But yeah it’s no secret I’m a huge River Song fan so the next box set has me hyped

me toooo! getting Rose and Nine back for more adventures would be an absolute dream. i’m not entirely convinced it won’t happen, either, with them doing interviews together and stuff. we’ll see!

Yaaaaas! i love River! i know she gets a lot of flak, but she’s one of my favs, tbh. Alex Kingston clearly loves it and i love her :raised_hands: i have high hopes for this new set. especially with John Dorney and Tim Foley writing 2 of them respectively.

I have basically seen next to no flak towards River. What are the criticisms about?

from what i’ve seen, lots of anti-Moffat spaces are down on her and generally think she’d been overused. they love to cite ‘Let’s Kill Hitler’ as a breaking point and say she turned into a mystery box

Hmm okay. I really like River most of the time (do not get me started on her slapping the Doctor as some sort of comic relief though), but I guess there is some degree of truth in those opinions - if you don’t enjoy River and the mystery that is such a key part of her storyline I guess you would consider her overused, and for the most part I like Let’s Kill Hitler but there was a significant, and somewhat muddled, increase in the mystery surrounding her. All a matter of perspective I suppose :slightly_smiling_face:

Edit: The Moffat years is my favourite era of Modern Who

Btw if Sara Kingdom should be considered a companion I would argue that that same title should apply to her brother Bret Vyon

Wow, this surprises me - I constantly hear people say she’s overused, that her story is too complicated for no reason, that she’s not a good character because she’s another ‘Moffat Strong woman’ who has to be the specialeat person in the world with no thoughts or feelings outside of one man and some token bisexuality to make her ~quirky~, and ‘‘worst’’ of all she’ll never be Rose so why would the Doctor ever love her :roll_eyes:

I disagree completely with most people’s criticisms of her because a lot of it I think grew out of bad faith interpretations of Moffat’s era back in the day when people were mad with him for not being RTD. But I do still see it around more than I would like

Can’t say I am sorry to have dodged those (clearly wrong :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:) opinions.

Two things I will agree with:

  • She’s not Rose (all the better for it, that romance does not hit the mark for me)
  • Moffat will never be RTD (nope, luckily we got a new approach witch gave us new stories instead of repeating what once was)

I don’t think River was overused in the show, but neither will I go for her Big Finish stuff - I heard the first Diary of River Song, but Husbands of River Song was a perfect denouement to her life and I would rather leave her where she is - a “less is more” approach if you like

My only criticism of River is that there isn’t really any chemistry between Eleven and River. He is seen as a goofy man-child who sniggers at the thought of being with a woman, whereas she is flirtatious and wild. They seem to totally clash.

The whole story would have worked better with Ten or a different Doctor.

It’s not until we get Twelve & River that I really saw an amazing chemistry.

Luckily she spent the most time with Twelve, chronologically, and that’s why she said Ten was so young. In my mind it’s Twelve she fell in love with, even though she technically married Eleven (after being programmed to be obsessed with the Doctor, the whole time with Eleven never felt genuine, but Husbands of River Song is really wonderful because it’s like she has accepted he will never love her but then she finds out he does, actually).

Just my thoughts!

I can’t agree about Eleven/River because they occupied a hell of a lot of my brainspace in 2011, but you are totally correct that Twelve/River are the best and Husbands of River Song is one of the greatest episodes of all time ever!

Ricky is an amazing choice but is simply too smouldering and dreamy for the TARDIS, I’m afraid.

Oh, I’m sure the TARDIS could survive. Kinda like to see them and Mel as the two companions, actually…
