Favourite Almost Companions

Well, I’ll admit I laughed a bit when submitting one of his quotes to the quote list. Could’ve been fun.

I really liked Ruby Duvall from the VNA “Iceberg”.
An investigative reporter who worked really well with the 7th Doctor. And at the end it was so close that it actually happened

Would Harry Sullivan count as an almost companion?

Harry was a companion - he travels in the TARDIS and via the TARDIS substitute. Also he was scripted as a companion.

Why would you try to erase the best companion in that photo???

True… I just feel like he got a bit shortchanged with how short of a run he got, and that abrupt, not getting back in the Tardis ending.

No more short changed that Dodo or Liz (who never even got to go inside the TARDIS because the Doctor kept somehow removing the console to work on it in other places).

Well, yeah, I get irritated about Liz, too, and Dodo had one of the worst exits in the show. And, of course, there’s Sara Kingdom, though I have yet to even see her as a companion.

I’ve always considered Sara to be a companion even though I know some people don’t. Yes she was only in one episode but it was a long one and she got to travel in the tardis.

You know, King Yrcanos would have been a lot of fun as a companion. :stuck_out_tongue: (Though, okay, I’d also root for Brian Blessed as the Doctor…)

Sara’s a tricky one. Even Jean Marsh doesn’t consider herself to be a companion - even though BF have extended her time to allow her to be one beyond The Daleks’ Masterplan.

Often companion status really needs to be more about how the production team thought of them than any ‘rules’ such as ‘travelled in the TARDIS’, ‘appeared in more than one story’ etc.

Most of the ‘official’ companions were characters who the production team scripted and cast to be ‘leads’ in the show.

Oh - and Liz’s departure was because Caroline John was pregnant and didn’t actually tell the production team, so she’d have gone whether or not they had decided they needed to replace her with Jo Grant.

Barry Shaw didn’t know she was pregnant at the time he decided not to renew her contract, though…

Yes, but either way she would have gone and not have got a proper departure.

I don’t think so. I do like Harry as a character but withinth the contect of the show as a companion in the few episodes he appered I find him superflous.

D84 from Robots of Death

Mags from The Greatest Show in the Galaxy (I know Big Finish did a trilogy with her that I’ve been meaning to look into)

Sabalom Glitz from The Mysterious Planet/others

Ada and Noor from Spyfall (though probably not alongside the full fam)

His death scene hit hard & yet I rewatched it more than once

He’s ‘superfluous’ mainly because the character was conceived in case they cast an older Doctor and needed a Ian-like character to do the action. As it is, I think Marter does some great work to make him a likeable person with an edge of buffoonery. He is particularly good in The Ark in Space.

Why has no one done a Duggan compilation to the song Hit by The Wannadies?

ooo! okay, so my fav almost-companions come from the Ninth Doctor Big Finish adventures! there’s the obvious: Callen and Doyle, a partly-sighted young man and his talking dog. but my absolute fav is Saffron Windrose. she’s on the way to seeing her homophobic parents and the Doctor helps her realize she doesn’t need their approval

I really liked Saffron too, Station to Station was a great story!
