Favourite 8th Doctor Companions (Audio)

I see Charley and Liv are tied for first (with 56% each), then Lucie (49%) and then Helen (47%). After that the percentages drop a fair bit. It’s a shame that Big Finish didn’t do more with Samson and Gemma. Only one audio (where it’s hinted at their history together) and then a handful of print Short Trips.

Oh wow, I never even knew they got any short trips!

It’s a small handful in the Big Finish Short Trips book collections which are long out of print and difficult to track down.

My favorites are Charley and Lucie. Yes, I’m a very original listener, you can tell. Third place is Helen.

Liv is one of my favorites too - one of my favorite scenes in Doctor Who is her and Eight talking about their future travelling together at the end of Dark Eyes - but it’s been trying times for me regarding her character recently. I don’t like Tania and even though I do think Liv’s arc in Stranded would make sense longterm, I think it was rushed. A lot. Then they backpalled it at the end by giving us a little bit more time with her, but because I already know where we are heading and the stories since then have done nothing with her character, I am really frustrated with Liv.

And Flatpack infuriates me. Liv is the best thing about it, actually, but honestly it got on my nerves on how uninterested both Eccleston and Root sounded with the story. It’s not the best story in the world anyway, but it left a sour taste in my mouth because it was supposed to be an emotional reunion for these characters. Liv LOVES the Doctor. There is so much potential in showing us how traumatised Nine was by the War by contrasting the Doctor Liv knew with the one she just saw, but that raw emotion just never shows itself. The story never hits the highs it should’ve.

Although not one of my favorites, Bliss is underappreciated.

Just one more addendum about Flatpack:

May I remind us that Liv started travelling with the Eighth Doctor during one of the worst periods of his life? They were healing from depression and grieving together. That’s why I was so angry when I finished Flatpack and couldn’t believe they did nothing of value of their reunion.

I did it a while ago for the other 8th Doctor Companions, so I am doing it for his Audio Companions now! Let’s go through them:
Really I don’t have much of an Opinion on either Gemma & Samson, not surprised anybody voted for them. They work well for their Main Story Terror Firma, but really there isn’t much about them to say!
I do like on the other Hand Bliss, still not as familiar with her as I would like to, but what I heard of her is quite enjoyable for the most Part!
Tasmin (one of my Votes), I’d love honestly. I know she doesn’t have too many Stories, but despite her tragic Fate, I thought she was rather a good Companion, it didn’t feel like they just brought her to bring another Punch into the S4 Finale. No, she actually felt like a fleshed out Character and I really enjoy her ending up with the Monk, having a Bond with them!
Cass is a tricky one, I don’t feel like she was necessary to be brought back to the Audios after Night. I do enjoy her in Night and from her first Boxset (the only one I listened to with her), she can be enjoyable. But I am still not quite sure where I’d place her, I guess I shall wait for this whole TW Arc to end to form more Thoughts on her. So far I’d like her, but she is on the lower End.
Audacity has been really enjoyable, probably the best Thing of the recent Charley Boxsets honestly! I quite like her, especially in her first Boxset and while I enjoy her Chemistry with Charley, I could have done with more Solo 8 & Audacity Stories.
Alex, I have not much of an Opinion on, if I am being honest, but I enjoy him :sob:
Not many Thoughts on Andy, but that’s mainly because I lack Torchwood Experiences AND lack much Stranded Experiences (I will get back to it, possibly).
The Eleven as a Companion was a nice Idea used well for its short Time, but really I prefer them as a villainous Force much more.
Tania is great from the Bits I heard of the first two Stranded Boxsets, easily the Highlight of those Boxsets for me.
Oh I love Molly, she’s great (hey look another Vote), such a Shame that her Series Dark Eyes was a bit of a Mess at times (it’s clear it was planned as a one-and-done). I do really enjoy her and wish we got her back instead of Charley, but oh well.
C’rizz.. hmm I am not a Fan of his Stories for a good Chunk. The DU is a very weak Arc for 8, so I will always associate him with that, BUT Conrad is great in the Part! And really the whole Idea of him is just superb, so really I do end up liking him even if I wish he was in better batches. :frowning:
Helen is great, isn’t she? What can I say what hasn’t been said about her? (another vote of mine) Her Intro the Red Lady, while cliché to say, is just great and one where I totally get the Hype surrounding it!
Oh, and Lucie. Not a Fan of most of her Stories (maybe it’s just my Lack of Love for this Style which very obvious is going for RTD1 Parallels), but despite it, she’s great, no doubts. Not a favorite of mine (Sorry sircarolyn!) but well it’s still Lucie bleedin Miller. Oh and Death in Blackpool is her best Story (in my Opinion).
Another Vote went to the other Half of the longest Tardis Team: I love Liv! She’s great in Dark Eyes 2, she’s great beyond that. I wish she kinda left 8 at this Point (sure she technically did that, but you know what I mean!), but regardless she’s just superb!
Oh, and there is of course Charley, one might think I am a Charley Disliker by all the Notes I made against her, but I’d love her. Do I get why one wouldn’t? Oh, yes, for sure! But she just clicks all the Buttons for me. A Spirit for Adventures? Check. A lovely Personality? Double Check. India Fisher? More check. She’s Part of my personal favorite Batches of 8th Doctor Stories (on Audio), some centric Stories are just so good (scherzo, chimes etc.) and really I just love her! I know what a shocker, I, an 8 Fan, love the most popular Audio 8th Doctor Companion?? Who would’ve thought that?!

Anyway enough of my Ramble, thank you for anybody reading this overly rambley Talk!

Returning to the post after starting Dark Eyes to vote for Tamsin and Molly. I find it encouraging that Liv and Helen are towards the top of the list, it does give me hope for the stories I have to come. Even if I couldn’t get on with Lucie despite her fan-favourite status

Charley’s main range arc is what got me back into Doctor Who a couple of years ago, and she’s probably a top three companion for me overall - I love that she ends up as a companion because she wants to travel and see the world, and I think her and Eight make a wonderful team. I also love that she isn’t from present day Earth, and she’s a bit posh in a jolly hockeysticks sort of way, as it makes her quite unique in the greater roster of companions. The biggest thing has to be India Fisher’s performance though - just fantastic in every story she’s in, and always memorable.

There’s also a TV/Book/Comic poll for Eight you can vote on because I couldn’t fit everyone in one poll.
