Favourite 8th Doctor Companions (Audio)

I see Charley and Liv are tied for first (with 56% each), then Lucie (49%) and then Helen (47%). After that the percentages drop a fair bit. It’s a shame that Big Finish didn’t do more with Samson and Gemma. Only one audio (where it’s hinted at their history together) and then a handful of print Short Trips.

Oh wow, I never even knew they got any short trips!

It’s a small handful in the Big Finish Short Trips book collections which are long out of print and difficult to track down.

My favorites are Charley and Lucie. Yes, I’m a very original listener, you can tell. Third place is Helen.

Liv is one of my favorites too - one of my favorite scenes in Doctor Who is her and Eight talking about their future travelling together at the end of Dark Eyes - but it’s been trying times for me regarding her character recently. I don’t like Tania and even though I do think Liv’s arc in Stranded would make sense longterm, I think it was rushed. A lot. Then they backpalled it at the end by giving us a little bit more time with her, but because I already know where we are heading and the stories since then have done nothing with her character, I am really frustrated with Liv.

And Flatpack infuriates me. Liv is the best thing about it, actually, but honestly it got on my nerves on how uninterested both Eccleston and Root sounded with the story. It’s not the best story in the world anyway, but it left a sour taste in my mouth because it was supposed to be an emotional reunion for these characters. Liv LOVES the Doctor. There is so much potential in showing us how traumatised Nine was by the War by contrasting the Doctor Liv knew with the one she just saw, but that raw emotion just never shows itself. The story never hits the highs it should’ve.

Although not one of my favorites, Bliss is underappreciated.

Just one more addendum about Flatpack:

May I remind us that Liv started travelling with the Eighth Doctor during one of the worst periods of his life? They were healing from depression and grieving together. That’s why I was so angry when I finished Flatpack and couldn’t believe they did nothing of value of their reunion.
