EXTERMINATE! - A Dalek Thread

We’ve got threads for Dalek Universe, Dalek Empire, Daleks!, and more. But not a dedicated thread to everyone’s favourite murderous pepperpots.

What’s your favourite Dalek story?
What’s your favourite Dalek design?
Whats your favourite Dalek underling? (Robomen, Ogrons, Pig Slaves, etc)

Remembrance of the Daleks

Probably the Imperial design, but I also love the silver/gold 60s Daleks, and the earlier RTD bronze Daleks.

Never really given it much thought, but probably the Robomen. More in theory than in execution. The Ogrons were also great.

I want to amend my earlier answer. This is my favourite Dalek story.

Also, meant to say, the reason I created this thread (and the reason I added this question) was because I had a thought the other day about how each revival showrunner created their own humanoid servants for the daleks.

RTD has the Pig Slaves

Moffat has the Dalek Puppets

And Chibnell has the Dalek itself taking over people

Add onto that their various other servants (sure I’m forgetting some, please do remind me)

They really don’t like sticking with one thing, do they?

I think it’s fun to have variety - the Daleks themselves can be pretty ‘one note’, so giving them different henchmen keeps them fresh.

I can’t say I cared for the Dalek puppets (again, nice idea in theory, didn’t really like the execution). The pig slaves were also a bit naff, but they were just grunts and felt like RTD doing his version of Ogrons.

That’s true yeah

I do wish they wouldn’t just sort of forget about what’s come before when a new person comes on though. Granted you can’t with the pig slaves, and it’s too early to say definitively about the mutant puppeteering, but we’ve not had Ogrons, Dalek Puppets, or Robomen come back

Granted Dalek Puppets and Robomen serve a fairly similar function, and there’s maybe a bit too much cyberman overlap with the robomen… but they’re iconic, I’d love to see the design updated.

Like look at this from the wiki

Tell you you don’t want to see that on screen?!

I don’t think it’s so much that they forget what’s come before - but more that new showrunners will want to try new things and use their own ideas. And if you suddenly had a pig slave show up with an Ogron and a new henchman, it’d feel tonally very silly. It’s nice that Moffat had some consistency, reusing the Dalek puppet idea a couple of times.

Eh, I think you could make it work, maybe not that group, but a an Ogron and a Dalek Puppet, or a Roboman and the mutant puppeteer I could see working and not being silly

That I absolutely agree with though. I’m not the biggest fan of the dalek puppets, but I like that they keep coming back.

Also credit to Chibnell too for using the Mutant Puppeteer in Revolution as well

Great thread! Why haven’t we done it before?

There are so many good ones to choose from. But I think Power of the Daleks beats most because they are so darned cunning in it. Dalek is a close second.

The first one I came across. The gun metal grey of Planet/Genesis/Destiny etc. I’m also fond of the original colour scheme and the bronze new series ones.

I love the Ogrons. There’s something about mercenaries who are also not that bright. I also like that they aren’t slaves, like the other underlings, but I wonder if they ever remembered to invoice the Daleks and who they’d address it to? ATTN: Dalek Supreme, payment terms strictly 30 days, or we’ll not allow you to exterminate us.

Me either! My biggest gripe with them was that stupid eye stick that suddenly sprouted out of their foreheads. I get that the idea was to show the audience that they were under Dalek control, but it made no sense! Surely there were less dumb ways to indicate that the person was under Dalek control? I couldn’t get past how irritated I was by it, because otherwise, they were a great and quite chilling idea.

That was superb, and quite brilliantly realised. Moffatt could have learned a thing or two from Chibnall, although I think it really had more to do with Charlotte Ritchie’s performance, which was excellent.

I’ve only read one Dalek novel and one Short Read.

So I’ll go with “War of the Daleks” - So Far! - But I have heard that other Dalek novels are even better! :sunglasses:

My question is this: What happens when (if?) the Daleks conquer/annihilate everyone? :comet:

What do they do then? I guess they’re just “done”?

Would that be I Am A Dalek?

The Doctor does ask them that periodically, and I don’t think they know.

Favorite Dalek story:
The Power of the Daleks

Favorite Dalek design:
Imperials and Renegades from Remembrance with bonus points to the heavy weapons Dalek

Favorite Dalek underling:
Huh, never gave that much thought before. I think they’re all kinda eh? Maybe I’d say Robomen.

My uncommon opinion is that I like what was done with the Daleks in the Steven Moffat era. I so often hear “Moffat doesn’t know how to do the Daleks,” but I like that in his era they’d always do something different with them. They were never purely shooty pepperpots, or just generically Daleks, under Moffat.

for the most part I’m not that big on Dalek stories. They’re not bad, they’re just middling to good for me most of the time. There are two notable exceptions to that though. One is Remembrance of the Daleks which is simply amazing. The second (and this will surprise absolutely no one) is if you combine Daleks and Romana. The Apocalypse Element is a permanent fixture in my brain and every other story is either (unintentional or not) foreshadowing to that or dealing with the trauma of that for her. My favourite of those would have to be Extermination which is frankly an episode of gallifrey designed precisely for me.

I really need to listen to that as well tbh
