Of course, 5 has a reputation for being the nice one, when in actuality he can be very short with his companions, and actually rather grumpy a lot of the time, so impressions can be misleading sometimes.

I think about this all the time. Ultimate “well well, if it isn’t the consequences of my own actions moment.” Except I genuinely don’t think ten took time to introspect about it afterwards.

And people who haven’t watched his era think this menace to society is a loveable grandpa! Which he is (even more so to Vicki than to Susan), but not the point!

The menace doesn’t last much beyond Season 1 though. There is a huge emphasis in those early days of how Ian and Barbara help adjust his world view.

He genuinely had affection for Cameca - you can see how hard it is for him to leave. And be fair, he was only engaged, not married, and that was more her misreading his signals and him not knowing the local culture.

There’s a running joke within my friend group that the show would be better if the rock from the first serial replaced the sonic screwdriver. Daleks shooting at you? Throw stones at them while you run. An electronic door blocking your way? Open it by smashing it with a rock. The reason why every alien planet looks like a quarry? The Doctor needs to refill their pockets full of rocks just in case.
The 5th Doctor loses his stone collection and uses a cricket bat, 6 replaces the rocks with sticks with various degrees of success. 7 and 8 go back to using rocks.
The 9th and 10th Doctor use the same rock but with a little string to retrieve it, 11 has a larger stone and uses it to mock the hell out of 10 while 12 uses a slingshot because he can’t be bothered to manually throw rocks at his enemies, at some point he get tired of it and just starts throwing rocks at people again.
13 has pockets so full of rocks she can barely move because of the weight. 14 uses only one stone again, but keeps looking at it with a sad face, 15 uses both hands to throw handfuls of stone of different sizes and colours while screaming “ROCKS” over and over again.
Both the War and the Fugitive Doctors use guns. They don’t use them to shoot at people, they throw guns at people. Nobody knows where they get so many guns or why they don’t use them and everybody is very much afraid to ask.

That’s 100% true, but there is still a lot more blatantly alien about the First Doctor in comparison to other incarnations even later in his life. His amusement about being the one responsible for the actions of Nero is a good example of that in season two. And then there is the roulette of death during his travels with Steven.
One thing I quite like about Simon Guerrier’s work with the character is how consistent he is. Guerrier is aware stories set with this incarnation should’ve double care about his interference in History because One was a much more cautious incarnation in that aspect - even to the detriment of his friends. That’s his whole argument with Barbara in The Aztecs, that’s what almost kills his friendship with Steven in The Massacre and it’s extremely present in a lot of Guerrier’s work - the most loud being the Oliver triology in the companion chronicles.
All that said, this is supposed to be a discussion topic about The Robot Revolution so I’ll try and not hijack another post for my ramblings.

And while this wasn’t in Vera’s review, a comment in the comments on the review actually pointed out something I think is interesting. The “AI Generator” name had been puzzling me a bit, and didn’t seem like it was actually AI generation commentary to me, just a misdirect.
But in this episode, it wasn’t the AI that was the problem. It was the toxic guy whose ideas were powering it… (This also goes right into AI reflecting all the biases and issues with their dataset, too. Its dataset was Alan.)

I usually rush to listen to loads of podcasts to hear their opinions but I haven’t done that yet, I think I am satisfied hearing everyone’s opinions here 
Plus I want to maximise my Big Finish time, podcasts eat into that…!
Yep that’s a good stance which is anti-AI but only because of the people in control of it. It’s kind of how I feel about it. I think AI is super cool but I also feel bad because of how it enriches a small subset of people at the expense of normal people and their jobs.
I think the “wrong anagram” would have worked a lot better if his name was eg. Alan Ingram and so it was “AI”. I don’t think the robots would have mistaken AL for AI…

Yeah, I tend to feel AI is what people make of it, and that half the problem is that if AI automates away most of the jobs, society needs to be restructured to where people don’t need to have jobs, and the people with most of the money don’t want to do that.
Which, of course, gets us into things like “Kerblam!”…
For me it’s gotten to be somewhat traditional after watching a new episode of a show to go on youtube and watch some people react/review it. And with Doctor Who, I also get the added bit of going and hitting “Do Not Reccommend This Channel” on all the toxic reviews, so it sort of helps filter out youtubers I don’t want to see…

I think I said last time round (for Season 1) that in the past I wouldn’t dare venture anywhere near opinions on an episode. TARDIS Guide is the first place I’ve ever felt inclined to share my opinions - negative and positive - about a newly-aired episode. But I still can’t bring myself to watch Youtube reviews. I think it’s the fact there isn’t really a right to reply (no one reads the comments) and if it was a review I disagreed with, it would probably just make me angry.

I’m already going to watch the episode regardless so I don’t need a review to validate my opinion. Usually I’ll only watch a review if I like the person, I feel as if the review is going add something to my enjoyment (though that is more analysis than review), or if it’s something I’m not planning on watching and just want to hear someone’s thoughts on.

Same here, although I do watch reactions! Funnily enough, all the reactors I watch for Who are American. I used to watch a couple of British ones but a lot of them stopped reacting altogether like Torchwood Boy. I do love a reaction vid but reviews etc eh not my thing.

I’m the same, I’ll read a written review maybe but I’m never ever going to not watch DW so I will have my own thoughts.
I also generally really cannot stand to watch online videos at all so video reviews and essays are not for me

Yeah I’ll watch reviews from people I already like (e.g. Josh Snares, Mr TARDIS, our very own Chris Stokes), but that’s mostly just because I want to hear how their takes compare/differ from mine, and because I like their content anyway
