I shall let you all know what i think once I’ve watched the episode
For me it felt like a big bank holiday family movie with bits for adults and bits for kids. In a similar vain to Smith and Jones. I really like the new companion and feel this is a very promising relationship. I’d agree it’s probably a strong 7 / light 8 out of 10. Nothing that’s going to blow your mind, but a fun start to a new series.
I am seeing more and more negativity towards this episode and it makes me sad…
Just been reminded of the psychedelic trip that was the time fracture thing. Didn’t quite work for me, but I appreciated them going for something properly weird for a change!
Don’t be, a lot of your critiques were fair and sometimes we just don’t jibe with an episode like everyone else does. I think it’s important to have perspective from both sides of the fence so I enjoyed reading your thoughts.
Rewatching the episode now.
It’s just a nice slice of Doctor Who isn’t it?
all hail Polish Bot
I gave it 2.5/5, and could quite easily be convinced to change that. Basically a fun average story. Seeing the stars in the sky by a lamp-post is ridiculous. The nine word idea sounds fun for a playground game but was not too well done, just having the Doctor slip a very obviously not-fitting word in every ninth word, then repeating it all so the audience can easily discern what he said. That never really went anywhere particularly, although I liked it being referenced in the big reveal at the end. What the robots heard Belinda say to him at the end must have been very odd.
The TARDIS scene at the end was too slow and of course scientifically it made very little sense but that tends to be the case. A bit slow in other places but at least there’s a sense of joy and a lot of bizarre ideas, making it a heck of a lot more engaging and worthwhile than most of the Thirteenth Doctor’s stuff. Having a power cut in a hospital seems rather dangerous but the fun tone distracted enough. Killing a cat, right there on the screen, I can see the humour but really it strikes me as an image that would upset more people than be humorous. The cloister bell ringing again, another idea constantly repeated. Oh, and the Doctor cries again! I laughed quite hard.
So, overall, basically more of the same from Series “1”, I liked it well enough.
That’s quite an interesting takeaway when he’s just suffered a loss.. I personally don’t see anything wrong with the Doctor showing emotion, in fact I think its a great move. Especially considering Thirteen bottled up so many of her emotions. Makes a good role model to kids too, specifically boys, that its okay to cry.
Yeah I think crying when a friend has just died is a perfectly normal response, I don’t get why people are against that.
One can argue either way. Wasn’t a big idea of the 14th-15th Doctor bi-generation that he had a long time to get over all his troubles and trauma, living a peaceful life on Earth? So why’s he so eager to cry all the time now? It’s a nice moment in itself but honestly, he cries so much, I think that’s one of the 15th Doctor’s main character points. The scarf, the recorder, the fez… crying!
If anything, I think crying when someone you care for dies in front of you is more normal than he behaved before and could be seen as the product of therapy. Bottling it up is what got him so messed up before.
Just because he got over things from the past and did “therapy out of order” as it was put, doesn’t mean he can’t feel emotions now. I’ve suffered lots of losses in my personal life and just when I think it cant get worse, the next one hits even more. Also what Shauny said re: bottling it up.
I don’t mind the Doctor crying but we were told it was an earned moment rather than shown. In other words, we were told he was friends with her for 6 months but we, as an audience, literally met her 2 minutes ago. So when he cries, it’s fine, we know he’s been friends with her for a while… but we as an audience don’t necessarily feel the weight of it because we’ve only spent 2 minutes with the character. That’s my niggle with it.
Rewatched it now. I definitely think that it is a 4/5.
I think that the base premise that a star certificate means something is such a fun idea that felt unique to me. I also think that it being Allan who brought it and gave it value was a good idea.
Belinda is a great character. This was not something that I was worried about because most of RTD’s characters are great.
Mrs Flood in the beginning was interesting.
I thought that the planet design was good, but I think that it would have benefited from a little longer runtime.
The episode is a great mix of dark and light themes. It has a lot of death, and the Doctor’s response when Sasha55 dies is a strong moment that also helps to set the stage that he has been there for 6 months.
The Polish bot is cute.
I liked the whole AI/AL thing. But this as well would have benefited from a little longer runtime to give a bit more motivation.
Overall, a strong start to the season. Looking forward to next week!!!
The fandom has ruined crying for me because the first thing I though when I saw 15 cry again wasn’t “Oh no, the Doctor just lost a good friend” it was “God people are going to be so mad at this aren’t they”
Exactly the same thought I had, which sucks massively. A properly good emotional beat, with that thought clouding over it.
Not sure if it was intentional, but I liked that this set design felt almost TARDIS-like with the support structure and domed shape.
I am so tired of the complaints about the crying. We need more male characters that can show other emotions than happy and angry! I love that the Doctor has a spectrum of emotions and is mature enough to show them!
Just rewatched, and I think I like it even more!
