Episode Discussion: The Reality War

I would only ever want Morbius back if we can have the Samuel West version, because he’s just fantastic in Dark Gallifrey and Morbius the Mighty. He’s definitely not the sort of villain I could imagine fitting into RTD2 though, so probably for the best.

Depending on how contracts were written for SJA, the Trickster may partly belong to Gareth Roberts…

Maybe it’s rights? I also am not certain if it’s Russell who actually invented it or Gareth Roberts, who has been rendered persona non-grata.

EDIT - Delta got there before me but it makes sense. Weird how I’m lamenting rights issues over the bloody Trickster when the Rani and the closest thing we’ll get to FP and VNA references crop up on screen.

Roberts will receive royalties if the Trickster is used. Hence a seemingly never-ending lengthy absence, I suspect.

Better than the photoshopped original image.

Yeah. But I agree with your original stand that they should try to invent more good new villains. But I don’t think that this is just an RTD thing. I can only think of a handful really good new Who villains that feels like future classics.…

I honestly really like the Stenza, wish they had been used more in S11!

But does a new Who villain need to be a future classic? They could just serve the story really well.

Where’s the not got a ■■■■■■■ clue option :sob:

Whatever we want to say about Moffat (I like him and think he’s dead lovely), I think he did the most for adding new and impressive villains to the canon. The Weeping Angels turned up in Flux, which I think is probably the most telling.

Frankly, if we’re being really anoraky, the Villengard weapon forges have also made a comeback, and I think personally that a lot of what RTD2 was initially doing was trying to fold in as much of the Moffat approach as it could. Church on Ruby Road definitely reads as “Moffat style done by RTD”, which is why it’s at turns really good and a bit of a mess, because Russell is good at different things to Moffat.

Russell also wants to vote for that option.

But that is something that we have had a lot of even if not in the finalies.

& “come back to this in a year’s time” seems optimistic lol

I think those are all far too clear and simple. I’m expecting it to be muddled and confused, with half an explination at best, like bigeneration

I think that Moffat has been the best at this. But I would also count the Judoon and Ood (maybe not a villain) as villains who have made their mark on the franchise.

True but I think focus on story not trying to create a future classic villain. The public decide that. I don’t think Moffat thought about the Weeping Angels being more than a one off until the fan response. Same with the Daleks, they just caught the public imagination, in fact Sydney Newman didn’t want bug-eyed monsters in the show.

I actually feel like this is the biggest missed opportunity of this era (maybe second after Susan). Why were they not the bad guys of this season’s finale? After Boom and JttW, it would have been so perfect if 15 searched for their boss during the season and confronted them at the end.
