Episode Discussion: The Reality War

Thank you lovely. I really appreciate that.

Hey, I can still imagine having adventures with 12. He’d get it. Or 13. She’d be the alliest of supportive allies.

12 and 13 are the most supportive ones in my opinion :hugs:

Yeah, 12 would punch a transphobe for me. Totally seeing it!

I really dislike the era overall, but good god if 13 isn’t the Doctor I’d probably most want to travel with, feel safest with, and feel part of a proper TARDIS family with.

The fam stuff is cringe but if it made Yaz treat me like a found sister then I’d bawl.

I’m open to that god awful Rowling guest stars as herself idea RTD had now…

This this this.

I always come back to his reasoning for depicting Davros in a different way in Destination: Skaro. It was one of the first products out of the gate of this new era and so the approach sort of set a tone for me going forward - how would this new era feel and how would the people making it be approaching it?

So I listened intently to his reasons and I completely agreed. Something needs to be done about disability being used when depicting villainy as a shorthand and even playing a part in a villain’s motivations. Everything Russell said about this, I agreed with. Personally, where I’d differ is I’d just leave Davros in the past rather than the change for the skit but his reasoning all made sense and I approved.

But then all of that care and consideration with that and the TARDIS ramps and challenging the Doctor assuming the Meep’s pronouns (which, by the way, I thought was done so incredibly clunkily for a gay writer with a social conscience) and then… They didn’t realise how Interstellar Song Contest might be read? I’ve said this exact sentence before - for a show with a social conscience as one of its greatest strengths it didn’t half mess up a lot of its messaging recently.

Maybe because loudly taking big easy progressive decisions and skirting over larger more complicated ones is almost the definition of performative. The big easy progressive decisions should be made, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying they shouldn’t. But when messaging elsewhere is so muddled, or just not given the same amount of care and consideration it all feels, at best, quite blinkered or, at worst, doing it for a pat on the back.

Aha, the TARDIS ramp. Shown off in a singular scene, and nobody ever mentions or uses it ever again. At least let Shirley go inside with it, for heaven’s sake.

Far more interested in showing disabled people that yes, even YOU, with your disabilities, can be utilized as the weapon of an oppressive state apparatus.

An actor who they got in for Space Babies, then realised they wanted to give a bigger role to, and filled a gap when Ruth Madeley was unavailable for filming.

I’ve just looked it up and he was meant to voice the baby that looks a little bit like Simon Cowell? I’m glad they got him in properly but that’s such a waste.

I will say, I think Lenny Rush is rather funny and did a lot of good work as Morris. Ruth Madeley as Shirley is a little shakier from an acting perspective, but still a likeable enough character. I just don’t understand (well, I do, it’s that he puts no thought into ideas beyond their aesthetic value and then just says what he likes about what his thought processes are) the obsession with weaponizing disability aids in this era.

So I’m still under NDA, but I’m gonna be in S3 as a new UNIT worker. I’m epileptic (I actually am, before you guys…) and they implanted this chip in my neck without permission so that whenever I face a baddie it gives me a seizure which means I whack into them and defeat them. Pretty neat. Empowering.

Just remembered they ‘chipped’ UNIT employees… without their consent? (Hey, remember when Bel told 15 off for scanning her without consent, and then 15 scanned Poppy but she didn’t say anything?) and not only that, but UNIT could only scan within a 10 mile radius anyway. That’s absolutely incredibly dumb. Lucky that Shirley and co. weren’t on holiday somewhere.

Work for UNIT, we chip anyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability…PS have you met the Doctor?

The only reason I think they said this was because 14/Donna live more than 10 miles from UNIT tower. I think that’s literally it. There’s no in-universe reason for the tech being that shit.

Exactly, the character is no longer needed. To bring him back & change him apparently in the name of being progressive is clearly just RTD being performative & wanting to be congratulated for his efforts.

I sometimes think about how much I’d adore Kate’s character if she wasn’t the ■■■■■■■ Brigadier’s daughter. The scene where she stands up to Conrad when he points a gun at Ruby gives me CHILLS. She has her cringe lines, sure. But she’s so unbeliveably good as a leader sometimes. Why did they have to make her the product of nepotism?

Is this controversial…?

Her dad was the Brigadier? Who knew? She never mentions that

Truly the “my dad was a toolmaker” of the Whoniverse.
