Episode Discussion: Space Babies

I didn’t like it, but I find people were a bit too harsh on it, honestly. Not sure if S2E1 will be ‘better’ for me, as far as Openers goes, I think Russel was never really strong with them. The only one of his that I do think is brilliant is “Smith and Jones”. For now, I will stay cautious, I hope it makes me go “Wow that was great”, but if it doesn’t then that’s fine as well, after all there is always next Week (until the finale at least…)

So, Space Babies. I still don’t think it’s the best ever episode, but I did up my rating from 6/10 to 7/10 after this rewatch. The constant title drop gag wasn’t annoying this time around, but didn’t find it funny either. I appeciated the tehnical sides much more as well as Ncuti and Ruby’s perofmances.

7/10

While Space Babies leans a bit too far into the childish side at times, it successfully establishes the themes of the season and the dynamic between the Doctor and Ruby. The visuals are fantastic (except for the odd baby CGI), the mystery is engaging, and there are plenty of fun moments—though some gags, like the “push the button” joke, feel incomplete.

It’s an exciting, whimsical, and occasionally heartfelt introduction to this new Doctor Who era. Not perfect, but a solid start.
