Episode Discussion: Space Babies

I asked my dad what he thought of Space Babies and he said “the babies should have been evil—they were wasted not being evil!” :joy:

i was honestly really charmed by the strollers obviously just being regular strollers with shiny plastic on them… felt like a very purposeful bit of silliness in a silly episode. and it felt aesthetically like a throwback to 2000s DW where the set/prop budget wasnt as high and some stuff was clearly made out of found objects/recycled bits

remembering a thought I had while watching, when Ruby picks a year one digit at a time the Doctor is surprised she says a fifth number, which means instead of going to 21506 they nearly go to 2150, which is uhhh, the Dalek Invasion of Earth, maybe not the best first trip for a companion

One thing that has amused me about the new era - and Space Babies in particular - is how hard RTD is leaning into the Timeless Child.

It’s no exaggeration to say the revelation went down like a lead balloon with some parts of fandom but a lot of its detractors seemed to cling to the hope that any subsequent showrunner would ‘retcon’ it away - or at the very least let it be quietly forgotten.

I, someone quite happy to accept the revelation at face value (just like every other shocking revelation in the show’s history) I did expect RTD to leave it alone and maybe bring it in at some later juncture when it fitted with a story he wanted to tell.

But no, he’s gone in fast and hard by not only repeatedly mentioning it, but having a parallel backstory for the companion and seemingly hinging the entire season’s arc on the mystery of Ruby’s origins.

There must be some very angry fans out there (but thankfully I steer clear of those cesspits).

Oh I love this as well. For RTD not just to reference it, but to own it, and make it the central arc for both the Doctor and the new companion, is such a great move, it’s brilliant.

There are. And so many of them thought RTD would “save the show” by getting rid of the wokeness (have they heard of RTD??), which makes it even more hilarious. I like to think he’s based the story around this just to screw with the haters

I watched Space Babies again, after watching the Unleashed episode.

Not rewatched an episode this many times in such a short succession, but each time I watch I love it even more.

I think Ncuti is already my top 3 Doctors, by the end of the series he may be number one. He’s just so fun to watch!

So excited for my favourite show right now.

I do love Ncuti and the energy he has. It follows on nicely from the energy Jodie had (which was often unfairly relegated to ‘Tennant-lite’ which, IMO, it was only similar to on the most shallow of levels (like how Colin and Capaldi might be compared to Hartnell).

I also might have a bit of a man crush on him and that’s usually been a position reserved purely for Hugh Jackman.

As someone who is not a fan of the Timeless Children, I can still appreciate RTD absolutely owning it and stuff like Flux burning down half the universe. Part of the problem of the Chibnall era is the Doctor didn’t have much of a reaction or time to process this content in a satisfying way so it is nice RTD is taking the time to do a lot of that.

The full transcript of Space Babies is now on the site, and I’ve also added in lots of my favourite quotes

You certainly did!

I think “Most of the universe is knackered, babes.” is one of the ones that definitely stays with me. (Because it is.)

I love this. It was a big revelation that appeared not to lead to very much initially. This is absolutely the way to deal with it: acknowledge the scale of the increase to the backstory and promise to explore it further. It makes it a much more exciting prospect, and I can’t wait to see where he goes with this.

It really is! Me included.

I’ll admit to not being sure about Space Babies in Doctor Who but the more I reflect on the episode the more I can see how Doctor Whoey the whole concept is and that its probably an episode I’ll return to and enjoy even more without the weight of ‘first series opener for years’ hanging around its neck.

And I think Bogeyman is a neat little joke.

The Bogeyman is such a funny joke but the reveal took about 20 seconds too long, when it was obvious what the Doctor was going to say.

But Ruby’s reaction was hilarious

DOCTOR: It’s snot!
RUBY: It’s not!

I giggled a lot at that.

I also genuinely love how Ncuti acts in this one, especially every time he corrects “Babies” to “Space Babies”, and he throws his arms in the air, wow I love that man :joy:

he is so beautiful. i think we should all take a moment and appreciate how beautiful he is.

also i feel about the opposite on this one, i don’t like that sort of joke but the doctor’s glee at getting to tell ruby completely made up for it.
