Episode Discussion: Lux

Doesn’t do any opinion by halves, ol’ Ian. Everything must be either THE WORST THING EVER IN THE HISTORY OF EVERYTHING OMG BURN IT, or world-class.

Ian, after seeing The Well:

“This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen. So far from the glory days of Underworld! No wonder the show’s getting cancelled”.

You realise that my first thought when you said “Ian!” was Ian Chesterton, then I saw “Levine” and went “Oh.”…

Ian Chesterfield would have LOVED Lux

You joke but I bet this will happen.

If Ian likes Lux I will now have to drop my rating to 0.5/5 - there’s no way I’m sharing the same opinion as him.

Worst episode of the show now?

Absolutely.

(That said, I find it ironic Ian is praising an episode centred around animation…)

Just idling away with some thoughts… I liked this moment but I’m imagining it being directed slightly differently. Imagine if, once the ‘screen’ fell away, the Doctor reached his hands over the black bars at the top and bottom of the episode aspect ratio. Like it suddenly goes to 16:9 and Ncuti’s hand ‘reaches over’ the black bars.

Lower Decks actually did something like that with the characters stepping over the black bars at the bottom when exiting a holodeck that they were doing a holodeck movie on.

This is a technique I see used in manga a lot with panelling and it’s always soooo cool, would have loved to see it here

Rewatched it tonight and it really is a fantastic episode. I am keeping my 5/5 and adding it to my favourites :star_struck:

Absolutely excellent episode!!!
Had me hooked the entire way through. Loved the pacing throughout. Mr Ring a Ding is a true force to be reckoned with! There’s so many things about this one I loved. I think this is really one of those examples of RTD at his best!

My partner and I were talking about it afterwards. She really liked the way they address segregation throughout, and how the Doctor talked about rising past it (can’t quite remember the line right now) to Belinda. The animation was stellar throughout, from the 2D to the 3D! I was so surprised he turned out to be another god! I had no idea that’d happen - it was a cool surprise! We also thought the way they got out of the film reel was really interesting - they could’ve just stopped at pulling the reels down over and over, but the added pushing forward through the screen and even burning the film reel was great.

No, anyone but Spooky Spoon

Wait. When does Lux mention spoons? I don’t remember the episode focusing on them.

It’s not mentioned; it’s shown. The light from the film projector is reflected from a spoon on the table at the moment where Lux manifests itself.

Ah. Okay. That makes sense. I thought it was something like EoD.

It’s an intetesting point but, no, I don’t have an issue with it. It’s narratively satisfying and makes a kind of sense from a mythological point of view. Symmetries like this are not uncommon in mythology. I guess the way to look at it is that these extradimensional beings operate in a system where their existence is tied to their domain of power. The only way to defeat them, therefore, is by the ‘rules’ of their domain.
